Barcelona have completed the signing of England international Anthony Gordon from Newcastle on a five-year contract, as the club continue to reshape their attack ahead of the new season.
Sources say the deal is worth an initial €70 million (£69.8m), with the total package potentially rising beyond €80 million including add-ons.
The 25-year-old had also attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Liverpool, but moved quickly this week to finalise a switch to the Catalan club.
Medical completed as Gordon links up with Barcelona project
Gordon travelled to Barcelona on Thursday to complete his medical after the two clubs reached an agreement earlier in the week.
He is expected to join up with his new team-mates before heading to the United States for the World Cup, having been named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
Tactical role alongside Yamal and Raphinha
Gordon is primarily deployed from the left flank but is also capable of operating centrally, offering Barcelona added flexibility in the final third.
He joins an attacking unit that already features Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, strengthening depth in wide areas as Barcelona look to challenge in Europe.
The club are also exploring further attacking additions, with a striker targeted following Robert Lewandowski’s announcement that he will leave upon the expiry of his contract in June.
Rashford situation remains unresolved
Barcelona also retain an option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently after his loan spell, with the English forward scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists during his time at the club.
The €30 million clause remains active, although Barcelona are understood to be exploring alternative structures, including a reduced fee or another loan arrangement with Manchester United.
Gordon’s arrival does not rule out Rashford’s return, but it adds further competition in a forward line already undergoing significant change.
Newcastle spell and career development
Gordon progressed through Everton’s academy system after loan experience at Preston North End, before establishing himself in the Premier League with the Toffees.
He joined Newcastle in a deal worth up to £45 million in 2023 and went on to score 39 goals in 152 appearances for the club across all competitions.
