Real Madrid require a strong performance tonight if they are to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit and knock Bayern Munich out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Bayern were deserving winners at the Santiago Bernabeu last week, even though their veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was named man of the match with a series of brilliant stops.

That should give Madrid confidence that they are still very much in this tie ahead of the return in Bavaria.

Boss Alvaro Arbeloa said: “I want my players to believe. That’s all I want. I’m convinced that the 25 of us going there will believe we can win and rise to the occasion.

“In Munich, they are convinced that, with the advantage they have and playing at home, they are favourites.

“But they will face white shirts, a round badge, and I’m sure we’ll put up a strong fight.”

Madrid stuttered to a 1-1 draw at home to Girona on Friday night, hampering their chances of winning La Liga, while Bundesliga leaders Bayern crushed St Pauli 5-0.
