Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has been named in Canada‘s squad for the 2026 World Cup despite a hamstring injury.
Davies has not played since suffering the injury in Bayern’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain this month.
But he has still been included as one of the star men in Jesse Marsch’s 26-man squad for Canada’s second successive World Cup appearance.
Canada were eliminated in the group stage in 2022 after losing all three of their games.
However, Marsch believes they are much better equipped for a tournament in which they will play all three of their Group B games on home soil.
“We have really our best group of 26 players that this country has ever assembled at any one time,” Marsch said.
“Are all of them right now at full 100 per cent? No, but they’re close.
“We’ve had a pretty good idea of who our core group is for a while. The real X-factor in all these decisions was to determine… which players are gonna be healthy, and who could we project to be really close to 100% and in the best form of their life.
“Luckily, we are on track with a lot of guys. Will everyone be 100% for the Bosnia match? No, that won’t be the case. But we will have a really strong core that will be ready for that match, and we believe we can get stronger as the tournament goes on.”
Canada begin their campaign against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 12.
They then face Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver as they look to take advantage of the expanded format for the 48-team tournament to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
