The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially unveiled the roadmap for the IPL 2026 playoffs, confirming a significant shift in the tournament’s concluding stages. In a move that has sparked both excitement and debate, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is set to host the grand final on May 31, marking the second consecutive year the world’s largest cricket stadium has been chosen for the summit clash.

This decision comes as a surprise to many, as Bengaluru was widely expected to host the final following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic title win last season. However, due to complex logistical challenges and stringent local requirements, the BCCI has opted for a multi-city playoff format spanning three distinct venues.

BCCI declares IPL 2026 playoff schedule and venues

Breaking away from the traditional two-venue playoff structure, the 2026 edition will see the action distributed across Dharamshala, New Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad. This special case arrangement ensures that the high-stakes matches are spread across some of India’s most modern cricketing infrastructures.

    • Qualifier 1: The top two teams will battle for a direct ticket to the final on May 26 at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.
    • The Eliminator & Qualifier 2: The focus then shifts to the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The third and fourth-placed teams will face off in the Eliminator on May 27, followed by Qualifier 2 on May 29.
    • The grand final: The tournament will reach its crescendo on May 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which will host its fourth IPL final (2022, 2023, 2025, and now 2026).

The inclusion of New Chandigarh and Dharamshala highlights the BCCI’s intent to bring marquee cricket to diverse regions, though the move to keep the final in Ahmedabad reinforces the venue’s status as the board’s premier destination for high-capacity events.

Why Ahmedabad is replacing Bengaluru as the final’s host?

The relocation from M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru has left local fans disheartened. While tradition dictates that the defending champions’ home ground often hosts the following year’s final, the BCCI cited “operational and logistical considerations” that fell outside their established protocols.

Deep-rooted concerns regarding crowd management likely influenced this pivot. The venue faced intense scrutiny following the tragic events of last year’s victory parade, where 11 lives were lost during the celebrations. Although the stadium was cleared to host league matches, the massive scale of an IPL final, coupled with specific demands from local authorities, led the BCCI to deem Ahmedabad a safer and more suitable choice.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, boasting a capacity of over 110,000, offers a controlled environment capable of handling the global spotlight. However, the decision has not been without its critics. Cricket enthusiasts have voiced concerns over a perceived venue monopoly, arguing that iconic grounds like Eden Gardens in Kolkata or the Wankhede in Mumbai are being overlooked in favour of the Gujarat flagship. Regardless of the controversy, the stage is now set for a cinematic conclusion to the 2026 season.
