India have suffered another major setback ahead of their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with Sai Sudharsan ruled out of the upcoming assignment due to a toe injury. The 24-year-old left-handed batter had already missed the team’s travel to Sri Lanka earlier this week and was subsequently absent from India’s ongoing warm-up game in Colombo.

Medical team opts for caution with Sai Sudharsan

Sudharsan’s absence leaves India without one of their promising young batting options at a crucial stage of their Test campaign. Although his recovery has progressed well, the medical team believes he still needs additional time before he can safely return to competitive cricket. According to BCCI sources, doctors have advised Sudharsan to focus on achieving complete biological healing before making a comeback. While there has reportedly been considerable improvement in his condition, his recovery has not reached the stage required for the demands of Test cricket.

Rather than rushing the batter back into action, the medical team has recommended a gradual increase in his rehabilitation and cricket-related workload. His strength and conditioning programme will also be stepped up in phases, with his progress closely monitored. The cautious approach is aimed at ensuring that Sudharsan makes a complete recovery and avoids aggravating the injury. With Test cricket placing significant physical demands on players, India are keen to ensure that the youngster returns only when he is ready to handle the workload.

    India face multiple injury concerns

Sudharsan’s withdrawal comes at an unfortunate time for India, who are already dealing with several fitness concerns ahead of the series. Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable for the Test assignment, leaving India without one of their most experienced pace-bowling options. Washington Sundar is another player dealing with an injury, although he has not been officially ruled out of the second Test at this stage.

There is also uncertainty surrounding captain Shubman Gill. The India skipper missed the ongoing warm-up fixture after suffering an impact injury to his right ring finger during a training session. Gill’s fitness will be closely monitored as India prepare for the opening Test, with the team management hoping that the injury does not develop into a serious concern.

Notably, India will begin their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka on August 15 in Galle. With Sudharsan now unavailable and several other players carrying fitness concerns, the team management faces some important selection decisions before the series gets underway.
