For years, viewers watched Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods. As the show lives on through the spin-off, Boston Blue, fans have been wondering if they will see Selleck on the show. Recently, spin-off star Donnie Wahlberg talked about Selleck’s reaction to the new series and whether or not he would make his return on the show.
Fans Saw The Debut Of The Blue Bloods Spin-Off, Boston Blue, In 2025
On Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck played New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, the patriarch of a family with a history in law enforcement. This series ran on CBS from 2010 to 2024.
Last year, fans saw the debut of Boston Blue, a spin-off revolving around Frank’s son, Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg. The show follows him as he moves from New York to Massachusetts, taking a position at the Boston Police Department.
As Blue Bloods drew to a close, Selleck often spoke about what he had planned next and projects he would be interested in. At the time, for example, he expressed interest in appearing in more Jesse Stone films, as based on Robert B. Parker’s novels. However, fans have also been wondering if they will be seeing Frank Reagan again on Boston Blue.
Wahlberg recently discussed the possibility of Selleck appearing on the spin-off While at CBS Fest, the actor spoke with Us Weekly, reminiscing about how supportive Selleck was.
Wahlberg shared, “Tom supported me doing [Boston Blue.]” With a positive reaction to the spin-off, he felt, “When the time is right, I’m sure we’ll find something to do together [on the show].”
Fans Previously Saw A Familiar Face On Boston Blue Earlier This Month
While he believed that Selleck would be willing to appear, Wahlberg wasn’t sure if it would necessarily be as Frank. He shared, “[He] may want to play [Frank again], [or he] may not.”
However, there were a few things to consider when it came to Selleck’s return. Wahlberg noted that it “will really depend on the timing, the situation, and the script most of all.” Ultimately, he felt that the time had to be just right.

In the meantime, Wahlberg also reminded fans that other familiar faces have been on the show. Speaking with the outlet, he shared, “It’s been incredible. We had Grandpa Reagan [a.k.a. Henry “Pop” Reagan, as played by Len Cariou.] We have a few surprises before the season ends of other Reagans. It’s so great.” Cariou had appeared in an episode airing earlier this month, “Beautiful Broken Things.”
In the meantime, Selleck is expected to return to the world of Jesse Stone. As noted by IMDB, the actor is already attached to appear in the tenth installment of the franchise.
