Bode Miller’s wife, Morgan Miller, is urging parents to prioritize water safety after marking eight years since the tragic drowning of her daughter, Emmy.
“8 Years,” Morgan, 39, wrote via her Instagram Story on Wednesday, June 11, with a throwback photo of Emmy in a hospital room. “Imagine you saw this and didn’t do everything you could to prevent it from happening to you….”
In a follow-up post, Morgan shared a message from professional swimming instructor and aquatic behavior specialist Karen Chavez.
“We don’t share water safety strategies out of judgment. We share them because we know the harsh reality of what could happen,” Chavez wrote via her Instagram Story. “We share because losing your child to drowning IS traumatizing. Thanks to more research and programs, we also know it is preventable. When you know better, you do better. Sweet Emmy is one of our ‘whys’ at @CastingHope. Thank you for sharing @Morganebeck.”
Morgan and Bode’s lives were turned upside down when their daughter drowned in June 2018 when she was 19 months old.
“I opened the door, and she was floating facedown in the pool,” Morgan recalled in an August 2021 interview with CBS This Morning. “I jumped in, and I pulled her out. And I started CPR … Every time I close my eyes at night to go to sleep, it replays in my head. It happens so fast.”
Since Emmy’s death, both Bode, 48, and Morgan have used their platforms to raise awareness about water safety.

During a recent appearance on the Today show, the couple offered practical tips that every parent can use to ensure their children are safe around bodies of water.
“If you can crawl, you must be able to float,” Morgan shared on May 28. “If you can walk, you must be able to swim.”

Morgan encouraged parents to consider enrolling their children in swim lessons as early as 12 months old. While some kids may fuss and not enjoy the experience initially, the retired pro volleyball player reminded moms and dads that safety comes first.
“Car accidents used to be the No. 1 cause of death and we put car seats in now. And how many times have we put a child in a car seat and they have kicked and screamed and cried as we try to buckle them in?” she asked. “But we do it because we know it’s the right thing, and we know it’s going to keep them safe.”
