Brendon McCullum has spoken for the first time after stepping down as England’s Test head coach, bringing the curtain down on a memorable four-year stint that transformed the team’s approach to red-ball cricket. While his aggressive style alongside captain Ben Stokes changed the way England played the format, the partnership ultimately fell short of achieving its biggest targets against India and Australia.

With his Test coaching chapter now over, McCullum will continue as England’s white-ball head coach. Speaking ahead of England’s ODI series against India, the former New Zealand skipper reflected on his time with the Test side, the lessons learned during his tenure, and the goals that now lie ahead.

Brendon McCullum reflects on his England Test coaching journey

McCullum admitted that he looks back on his four years with immense pride despite the disappointing finish. England registered 27 wins, 20 defeats and two draws during his tenure, with several memorable victories redefining the team’s identity in Test cricket. The 43-year-old thanked everyone associated with the setup and described the opportunity to coach England’s Test side as one of the greatest experiences of his long cricketing career.

“I look back on the time fondly and thank everyone that was involved in it. I’ve absolutely loved the last four years. I’ve felt incredibly privileged to be England’s men’s Test head coach. Over the course of 20-odd years in this sport, the last four years have possibly been the biggest highlight I’ve had,” McCullum said.

McCullum acknowledged that England were unable to achieve what they had set out to accomplish in the marquee Test contests. During his tenure, England drew home series against both Australia and India but endured heavy away defeats against the two cricketing powerhouses. He admitted that those results ultimately played a major role in bringing his Test coaching stint to an end.

“Fundamentally, you want to be winning the big series. India and Australia are the marquee series and if you don’t win those you haven’t quite been able to achieve what you wanted to. We had opportunities against both teams, but the results didn’t live up to it at the back end,” he added.

Focus shifts to England’s white-ball future

Although his Test responsibilities have ended, McCullum has already turned his attention towards rebuilding England’s white-ball teams. England recently completed a dominant 4-0 T20I series victory over India and climbed to the top of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings, providing plenty of encouragement ahead of a busy international calendar.

The ODI side, however, remains a work in progress after disappointing ICC tournament campaigns in recent years. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, McCullum believes England have enough time to rebuild into genuine title contenders. He expressed confidence in the current group and stressed that his immediate priority is preparing the team to challenge for another World Cup trophy.

“The T20 side is in a pretty good space at the moment. The one-day side has some work to do, but I’m confident we’ll continue making improvements. With a World Cup not too far away, we’ve got an opportunity to become a realistic chance of lifting the trophy. That’s where my focus is at the moment,” he concluded.

McCullum now begins a new phase with England, aiming to restore the team’s fortunes in limited-overs cricket while leaving behind a Test legacy that changed the side’s philosophy, even if it ultimately fell short of delivering victories in the sport’s biggest rivalries.
