The Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise has mourned the deaths of some cast members over the years.

The hit series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, followed Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as a high school student who also happened to be in charge of saving the world from vampires and demons. Charisma Carpenter, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz and James Marsters made up the rest of the cast.

After the show ended, the alums weathered several losses. Head’s family confirmed in June 2026 that he’d died at age 72 following complications from pneumonia. (Head played Buffy’s watcher Rupert Giles throughout the entirety of the cult classic show.)

Brendon died in March 2026 at age 54 of “natural causes,” his family revealed in a statement. His costars publicly honored Brendon, who played Xander Harris on all seven seasons of Buffy.

“I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky,” Gellar wrote via Instagram before quoting one of Xander’s famous lines. “They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me.”

Michelle Trachtenberg, meanwhile, died in February 2025 after a private health battle.

“It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away,” a rep for the Gossip Girl alum told Us in a statement at the time. “The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.”

Us confirmed in March 2026 that Nicholas Brendon died at the age of 54.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” his family told Us in a statement, adding that Brendon died in his sleep of “natural causes.”

“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art,” the statement continued. “Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

His family concluded: “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”

Camden Toy, who was known for his work playing monsters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died at age 68 in December 2023. Before his death, Toy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which his longtime partner, Bethany Henderson, opened up about on social media.

“He was diagnosed in February last year after months of mysterious pain. For many reasons we were very hopeful for, at least, a longer and more fruitful time on planet Earth. Even the more recent challenges felt more like a hiccup in progress. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ve reached the end of the road with the doctor’s treatments,” she wrote via Facebook noting that Toy did not go public with his diagnosis “for many reasons.”

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head,” they announced. “He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family.”

Emily and Daisy continued, “It has been, and forever will be, an honor and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many. We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in — he loved his job very much, and he always considered himself incredibly lucky, to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades.”

Anthony was nominated alongside the Ted Lasso cast for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (now known as The Actor Awards) in 2024.
