Team Canada has improved to a record of five wins and three losses in the 2026 Women’s Volleyball Nations League. On Wednesday, Canada defeated China 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11 in Hong Kong.
The Canadian team was led by opposite Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia, who had 27 points. Van Ryk had 22 attack points, three block points and two aces. Opposite hitter Alexa Gray of Lethbridge, Alberta also had a notable game as she had 25 points (23 attack points and two block points). Meanwhile, Abby Guezen of Sherwood Park, Alberta had 22 points (17 attack points, one block point and four aces).
With the win, Canada improved to a record of six wins and three losses. They are at 17 points and tied with Poland for fifth place in the overall standings. Canada has got the full three points in wins over the United States, France, the Netherlands and Thailand. Canada has then had two points in five set wins over Poland and China, and then had one point in a five set loss to Japan.
Canada has three more preliminary round games left before the quarterfinals. They face Belgium on Thursday, Italy on Saturday and the Dominican Republic on Sunday. Canada needs to finish in the top eight to reach the quarterfinals. However, they may have to finish in the top seven if the host China is not ranked in the top eight.
