Team Canada has qualified for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in women’s volleyball. On Saturday in the NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) Olympic Women’s Continental Qualifier in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Canada defeated the host Dominican Republic in four sets, 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14.
Canada was led in scoring by outside hitter Alexa Gray of Lethbridge, Alberta and opposite Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia. Gray and Van Ryk had 22 points each.
This is the fourth time ever that Canada will have competed in women’s volleyball at the Olympic Games. They previously participated at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada had an automatic berth because they were the host nation. They finished in last place with a record of zero wins and three losses. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Canada once again finished last. Then, at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Canada won their first ever Olympic match in women’s volleyball as they beat Peru in five sets, but were unable to qualify for the quarterfinals, and finished ninth.
Canada is one of three nations to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in women’s volleyball so far. They are joined by the host United States and Thailand (the Asian champion).
