Canadian chuckwagon racing legend Tom Glass of High River, Alberta passed away at the age of 77 according to Amir Said of CBC News on Saturday. The cause of death was a stroke.

Glass won four Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championships as a driver. The titles came in 1983, 1987, 1992 and 1994. Glass also won two Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championships as an outrider. Those titles came in 1965 and 1971.

In 1987 and 1998, Glass also was named the Calgary Stampede Aggregate winner. The aggregate winner is the chuckwagon racer who has the best overall time at the Calgary Stampede over the first eight days of the event. Glass’s other chuckwagon racing accolades include winning three world championships (1980, 1981, and 1988), and being named the 1980 North American Chuckwagon Championship winner.

Tom’s family also was involved in chuckwagon racing. His father Ron won four Calgary Stampedes as a chuckwagon racing driver (1941, 1946, 1947 and 1949). Tom and Ron Glass were both inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in Red Deer. Ron was honoured in 2000 and Tom was honoured in 2013. Meanwhile, Tom’s son Jason is a four-time world champion chuckwagon racing driver.

After competing in chuckwagon racing, Tom Glass went into broadcasting. He was an analyst in chuckwagon racing for CBC Sports.
