Ellie Black reclaims Commonwealth gold, Fontaine earns bronze
Ellie Black of Halifax won the gold medal in the women’s artistic gymnastics individual all-around competition at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Black also won gold in the women’s all-around competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Queensland, Australia.
Eight years after winning all-around gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Canada’s Ellie Black is golden again. Black, the oldest competitor today in the women’s field at age 30, claimed gold in the women’s all-around final with a total score of 53.050, adding another Commonwealth title to her decorated career. Black posted scores of 13.850 on vault, 13.250 on uneven bars, 13.200 on balance beam, and 12.750 on floor exercise.
Black made history with the victory, becoming the first gymnast — male or female — to win two Commonwealth Games all-around titles. The four-time Olympian is competing in her third Commonwealth Games. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Black captured three medals — silver in the vault, gold on balance beam, and bronze on floor exercise. She followed that with another standout performance at Gold Coast 2018, winning three more medals — two gold and one silver. Black’s medal run at these Games is not over yet. She has already earned a silver medal in the team event and has qualified for the women’s uneven bars and balance beam finals, giving her more opportunities to add to her 2026 Commonwealth medal haul.
Also making the podium was Canada’s Lia-Monica Fontaine, who earned bronze in her Commonwealth Games debut with a total score of 52.800. Fontaine delivered a strong 14.300 on vault, followed by 13.100 on uneven bars, 12.250 on balance beam, and 13.150 on floor exercise. Fontaine finished just 0.100 points behind Australia’s Breanna Scott, who took silver with a score of 52.900.
