Chelsea Handler is not holding back when it comes to modern romance. The comedian recently vented her frustrations about today’s dating scene during a candid podcast appearance, claiming that dating apps and endless options have completely changed how people approach relationships.
While Handler admitted she still enjoys dating casually, she also revealed why so many successful women around her are struggling to find lasting connections.
Chelsea Handler made it clear she believes technology has fundamentally damaged dating culture.
During an appearance on the “Howie Mandel Does Stuff” podcast, the 51-year-old argued that social media and dating apps have created an endless cycle of options that keeps people from fully committing.
“It’s very hard in today’s world to meet straight guys that have their s— together … Something’s wrong. I don’t know what’s wrong,” Handler admitted per Page Six.
The “Fun Size” star explained that she originally thought she could help women meet quality men, but quickly realized the problem seemed far bigger than she expected.
“So, I was initially trying to help straight women meet straight men,” she said. “But I think with dating apps and social media, there’s just so much abundance and so much choice that nobody really feels like they have to … lock it in.”
According to Handler, swipe culture has made effort in relationships almost nonexistent because people always believe there is someone else waiting online.
“They can swipe through 50 women a day,” she explained. “So they’re not making the effort that people used to make to date.”
Handler Says Successful Women Keep Facing The Same Problem
Chelsea Handler also shared that many accomplished women she knows are experiencing the exact same frustrations in their dating lives.
She praised the women around her for building impressive careers and independent lives, but claimed many still feel disappointed when it comes to finding meaningful relationships.
“I meet all these amazing, incredible women that are like bada—-,” Handler said, adding, “They have their own lives, they have their big jobs and they’re all just like, ‘There’s no men out there.’”
Handler suggested that constant access to dating apps has created a mindset where people rarely feel pressure to fully invest in one person anymore.
Instead of putting in consistent effort, she believes many people simply move on to the next option.
Chelsea Handler Admits She Does Not Want To Be ‘Tethered’
Despite criticizing modern dating culture, Handler admitted she is still actively dating, just not seriously.
The TV personality explained that she currently enjoys exploring connections without committing to a relationship.
“I wouldn’t say I’m in a relationship. I would say I’m dabbling in different areas of my life,” Handler revealed.
She then made it clear that independence remains incredibly important to her, noting, “I don’t like to be tethered to one person.”
Handler has often spoken openly about choosing freedom and personal growth over traditional expectations surrounding relationships and marriage.
During an April 2026 appearance on the “Angie Martinez IRL” podcast, Handler revealed her vibe is all about freedom.
“I love the idea that I don’t have to check in with anybody about anything I do. I don’t have to consider or consult with anyone. If I want to get on a plane and go to Paris, which I will do in a moment’s notice,” she said per The Blast.
Handler Previously Thought Jo Koy Was ‘Her Person’
Chelsea Handler’s latest comments come years after her highly publicized relationship with fellow comedian Jo Koy.
The pair dated for less than a year before announcing their split in 2022, but Handler initially believed the romance had restored her faith in relationships.
At the time, she said Koy helped renew her “faith in men, in love [and] in being 100% who I am.” However, the former talk show host later admitted she eventually realized the relationship simply was not meant to last.
During an appearance on the “Now What?” podcast, she reflected honestly on the breakup. “Towards the end of the relationship, it just became clear that this was not my person,” Handler explained.
Even though the relationship ended, Handler has continued to speak openly about love, dating, and the challenges of forming genuine connections in today’s world.
Chelsea Handler Says She’s ‘Too Hot’ To Keep Dating Older Men After 50
In March, Handler opened up about why she stopped dating older men after turning 50, admitting she simply no longer felt drawn to large age gaps.
As The Blast reported, the comedian revealed that she spent much of her 20s and 30s dating men decades older than her, saying she routinely dated “40-year-olds when I was 20” and “50-year-olds when I was 30.”
However, that changed as she got older. Handler joked, “I’m too hot to be dating 65-year-olds,” explaining that she decided to start dating younger men instead.
The star is currently dating a 37-year-old man she met at a blackjack table in Las Vegas, describing the relationship as refreshing and fun.
Handler also said modern dating has made her value independence even more, adding that she no longer wants to structure her life around a partner.
