Perhaps the greatest surprise about Chelsea’s pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Danny Welbeck is the level-headed judgement the move suggests from a club not always renowned for clever recruitment.

Welbeck turns 36 in November but his form suggests he is at his peak after the best season of his impressive career in 2025/26, with his tally of 13 goals and total of 2,265 minutes representing his best figures in a Premier League campaign.

Before joining Brighton on an initial one-year deal after his Watford contract was terminated in 2020, Welbeck had not scored more than five goals in a league season since he netted nine times for Manchester United in 2013/14.

Having hit double figures in each of the last two seasons, Welbeck can add to Chelsea’s firepower – but the variety of his game and influence off the pitch may appeal most to new head coach Xabi Alonso.

Danny Welbeck: Why Chelsea want transfer deal

Chelsea have had Brighton’s executives on speed dial over recent years, paying an initial £47.5 million for full-back Marc Cucurella, £25m for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and millions more in compensation for former head coach Graham Potter and his staff in 2022.

They are likely to find the Seagulls hard bargainers again for Welbeck, who is in the final year of his contract but has become crucial to Albion’s fortunes under head coach Fabian Hurzeler.

Only three English players bettered Welbeck’s total of 13 league goals in 2025/26 and it is unlikely many had more of a positive effect in the dressing room at their clubs.

With Hurzeler in his first Premier League role and the youngest manager in the top flight at 33, the former St Pauli boss has counted on Welbeck to be a role model, winning the Players’ Player of the Season award in May.

Hurzeler and Welbeck’s teammates have effusively praised his inspirational presence, which will appeal to Alonso after his experience in charge of a Real Madrid squad whose attitude was often questioned during the Spaniard’s brief time in charge at the start of last season.

Chelsea are not short of attacking options, making Welbeck’s exemplary attitude and proven willingness to be a steadying squad member rather than a superstar important.

Brighton have brought Welbeck on 52 times and substituted him off 80 times during his time at the club, with Hurzeler urging his players to emulate Welbeck’s tireless defensive work after a win over Newcastle last season.

“I will clip all the sprints back and, all the time, how Danny defends,” Hurzeler told his squad in an address caught on camera in the post-match dressing room.

“He gets the rewards for how he works defensively. That’s the main thing and that’s the benchmark.”

Danny Welbeck age: Is he too old for Chelsea?

Alonso’s reported interest in 33-year-old Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka – Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris says the midfielder will not be leaving – indicates the type of experience and intelligence he wants to add to his squad.

Alongside 18 years in senior club football, Welbeck has been unfortunate not to increase his total of 42 England caps under current Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel, who was tipped by many to give Welbeck the chance to add to his 16 international goals.

Welbeck’s proneness to injury cannot be attributed primarily to age and has improved significantly during his mid-30s.

He first suffered serious knee problems with United in 2009/10, followed by more in 2014/15 with Arsenal, sitting out much of 2015/16 and 2016/17.

An ankle injury kept him out for almost all of the 2018/19 season and he missed more than three months for Watford in 2019/20 because of a hamstring injury.

With Brighton, Welbeck missed 14 games because of a hamstring issue in 2021/22 and 11 in 2023/24.

That track record shows how Welbeck requires careful physical management, which Albion appear to have successfully achieved.

Their talisman made 49 league appearances across his first two seasons, averaged 30 over the subsequent three and played in all but one game in 2025/26.

Danny Welbeck goals: Striker haunts Chelsea

Several of Welbeck’s more memorable Albion goals have come against Chelsea, who are the side he has scored most against in the Premier League.

Welbeck will have work to do to match his existing tally of five goals at Stamford Bridge, as well as netting twice against them in home matches.

Clinical Welbeck finds different ways to score stylishly: by the time he reached his half-century for Brighton last season, Albion Analytics put Welbeck’s figures for the club at 12 match-winning goals, registering through 13 headers, 11 goals with his left foot and 26 with his right.

Should he leave Brighton, Welbeck’s last goal for the Seagulls will have come against Chelsea at the Amex Stadium during a 3-0 win over Chelsea on April 21.

Danny Welbeck celebrates for Brighton against Chelsea

The thrashing spelled the end of Liam Rosenior’s fleeting time as Chelsea manager, although the Premier League rookie had time to lambast his squad’s sulky performance in the immediate aftermath.

When Hurzeler came under pressure in February after a dismal mid-season run, Welbeck’s performances and standard-bearing behind the scenes were among the key reasons why Brighton turned their form around in stirring fashion to qualify for Europe.

Had Rosenior had more characters of Welbeck’s class to call upon, he may have found his time at Chelsea considerably less challenging.

    Danny Welbeck stats

Welbeck has more than a goal every four matches for Brighton – and that average has gone up from one in five in 2023/24 to one in three the following season and more than one in three in 2025/26.

Accuracy is a hallmark of Welbeck’s, with only Igor Thiago, Viktor Gyokeres and Junior Kroupi bettering his conversion rate of a little more than 23% last season, among players to have scored at least nine Premier League goals.

Excluding penalties, Welbeck also exceeded his expected goals total by almost two in the league last season. Here’s a look at some of his other statistics from the 2025/26 top flight.
