David Muir anchors ABC’s World News Tonight. He’s had the role since Diane Sawyer left in 2014. Overall, he’s worked with ABC for two decades and earned multiple Emmys for his reporting. World News Tonight often beats CBS and NBC in viewership. However, his popularity recently suffered a huge blow. Keep reading for all the details.
David Muir Faces Shocking Setback At ABC
There’s been a lot of chatter online about Tony Dokoupil’s shocking promotion at CBS. He took over as anchor of CBS Evening News in January 2026 after John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois abruptly quit in late 2025. The shocking exits came amid a huge backstage shakeup at CBS under Bari Weiss. CBS has lagged behind ABC and NBC in ratings since Tony Dokoupil’s tenure.
Tom Llamas anchors NBC Nightly News, taking over from Lester Holt in 2025. David Muir’s experience as an anchor could play a role in bringing viewers. However, one of his competitors is gaining ground.
TV Insider reported that NBC Nightly News edged ABC’s World News Tonight out of a key demographic. More adult viewers 25-54 tuned in to Tom Llamas for the week of August 3. However, David Muir still brought in the most overall viewers.

Tony Dokoupil fell way behind with just 3.9 million viewers compared to 6.5 million (NBC) and 8.3 million (ABC.) David Muir’s job is safe but how much longer until CBS finds a new Evening News anchor?
Fired ABC Anchor Claims Network Covered Up COVID Story
CBS has faced a lot of backlash recently as fired anchors allege that they were silenced on stories regarding President Trump and his administration. However, a former ABC reporter claimed that the “liberals” at the network shut down his story on the origins of COVID-19.
Terry Moran was fired by ABC in 2025 after criticizing President Trump and his advisor, Stephen Miller. Terry Moran made shocking allegations about his time at ABC. He claimed on The Fifth Column podcast that a story about the COVID-19 virus was scrapped. As you may remember, there was speculation during the pandemic that the virus was created in a lab, but the official story was that it originated from a wet market that sold wild animals.
Terry Moran claimed that Dr. Fauci, who is currently under investigation by the U.S. Senate, reviewed the script for the segment and suddenly ABC refused to air the report. The former ABC anchor speculated, without evidence, that Dr. Fauci pressured the network not to air the report.
If what Terry Moran said is true, then CBS isn’t the only network censoring reporters. Share your thoughts in the comments.
