India are set to begin their two-Test series against Sri Lanka on August 15, with the opening match scheduled to be played in Galle. The series promises to be an important challenge for the visitors, who will look to start their campaign on a strong note despite entering the contest with several injury concerns. With the Indian team managing fitness issues involving some key players, questions surrounding the composition of the playing XI have already generated plenty of discussion ahead of the first Test. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has now offered his prediction for the XI he believes could take the field in Galle.

Deep Dasgupta names his India XI for the opening Test

Dasgupta has backed Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to open the innings for India in the first Test. The experienced Rahul could provide stability at the top, while Jaiswal’s aggressive approach could give India an early advantage.

At No. 3, Dasgupta has picked Devdutt Padikkal, followed by captain Shubman Gill at No. 4. Gill is expected to play a crucial role in anchoring India’s batting unit, particularly with the team dealing with a number of unavailable players.

Rishabh Pant features at No. 5, adding an attacking dimension to the middle order. Behind him, Dasgupta has selected Dhruv Jurel as the second wicketkeeping option in the XI.

The former cricketer has also gone with a strong spin combination. Ravindra Jadeja is joined by left-arm spinner Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav, giving India three varied spin options for conditions that could favour slow bowling. The pace attack, meanwhile, comprises Gurnoor Brar and Mohammed Siraj.

Dasgupta’s predicted India XI for the Galle Test: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, Kuldeep Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, Mohammed Siraj

India’s selection plans complicated by injury concerns

India’s preparations for the Sri Lanka series have been complicated by a growing list of fitness issues. The biggest setback came with Sai Sudharsan being ruled out of the two-Test series after failing to recover sufficiently from his toe injury. Jasprit Bumrah is also unavailable for the Test assignment, creating a significant void in India’s pace attack. Washington Sundar is another player dealing with an injury and remains a fitness concern ahead of the second Test.

Captain Gill has also been under observation after suffering an impact injury to his right ring finger during training. He missed India’s ongoing warm-up match in Colombo, although his availability for the opening Test remains an important point for the team management.

With several players unavailable or carrying fitness concerns, India could be forced to rely on some less-experienced options. Dasgupta’s predicted XI reflects that situation, combining established names such as Gill, Rahul, Pant, Jadeja and Siraj with younger players who could be handed important responsibilities. The first Test in Galle on August 15 will therefore provide an early indication of how India cope with their injury setbacks and whether their new-look combination can deliver a winning start to the series.
