Sri Lanka and India are all set to renew their Test rivalry when the two teams meet in a two-match series beginning on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium. The series is part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, with the second Test scheduled to be played in Colombo.

Both teams will be eager to make a strong start to the series, with Galle expected to provide the kind of conditions where spin could play a major role. Sri Lanka will look to make the most of home advantage, while India will rely on the experience and quality in their batting and bowling departments. Ahead of the opening Test, Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva has already identified one Indian batter who could pose the biggest challenge to his side.

Dhananjaya de Silva picks star Indian batter as biggest threat

De Silva believes veteran batter KL Rahul could be the player Sri Lanka need to watch most closely during the two-Test series. While India have several high-profile batters in their ranks, the Sri Lankan captain singled out Rahul because of his extensive international experience and familiarity with conditions in Sri Lanka. Rahul’s ability to adapt to different conditions makes him a valuable asset for India, particularly in a Test series where patience and shot selection could prove crucial. His previous experience in Sri Lanka could also help him deal with the hosts’ spin-heavy attack.

“I would say experience-wise KL Rahul would be the biggest threat for us. He has done well all around the world and he has played a few matches in Sri Lanka as well. Last time (in 2017), I think he played in our conditions and knows it pretty well,” De Silva said, as quoted by The Times of India.

Star-studded squads promise a thrilling contest

With both teams boasting several established names and exciting talents, the upcoming series has all the ingredients for a closely fought contest. India’s batting unit features captain Shubman Gill, Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Rishabh Pant adds another attacking dimension to the middle order. Ravindra Jadeja provides experience as an all-rounder, while Kuldeep Yadav could become a key weapon if the Galle surface offers significant assistance to spin.

Sri Lanka will counter with a strong group of their own. Captain De Silva will be central to their plans, while experienced campaigners such as Dinesh Chandimal can provide stability with the bat. Kamindu Mendis has also emerged as an important member of the side, offering Sri Lanka another dependable option in the middle order.

With Lahiru Kumara providing pace and Prabath Jayasuriya expected to play a major role with the ball, Sri Lanka have plenty of weapons to trouble India’s star-studded lineup.
