Adventure Canada has opened bookings for the 2027 departure of its Discover the Islands of Japan expedition — a culturally rich, small-ship journey that explores Japan’s coastal communities, historic cities, and lesser-visited islands.
In line with the company’s “Nature. Culture. Stories.” credo, this 12-day voyage, which will run April 26 to May 6, 2027, is designed for curious travellers seeking a deeper understanding and experience in Japan.
Cedar Swan, CEO of Adventure Canada, explained: “This expedition is about seeing Japan differently. By travelling along the coast and visiting these lesser-known regions, out guests gain a richer understanding of the country’s layered history, artistic traditions, and natural beauty.”
The journey begins (and ends) in Osaka, one of Japan’s great port cities, where contemporary energy and deep history meet in lively streets, distinctive neighbourhoods, and a celebrated food culture. There is time for independent exploration here before boarding the expedition vessel Heritage Adventurer on Day 2. From here, the itinerary follows a lesser-used route through Japan’s coastal regions and islands, with stops in samurai-era towns, artistic hubs, and UNESCO-listed landscapes.
Some of the highlights include:
- Tamano & Uwajima: Experience pearl cultivation, classical gardens, and historic canal towns;
- Yakushima Island: Walk among ancient cedar forests with a chance to spot rare wildlife at Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site;
- Nagasaki: Reflect on history at the Peace Memorial Park and explore the city’s unique international heritage;
- Hagi & Matsue: Step into Japan’s feudal past through preserved castles, samurai districts, and centuries-old pottery traditions;
- Busan, South Korea: Spend a day exploring this lively port city where tradition and modern life blend along the coast;
- Kanazawa & Shirakawa-go: Discover traditional crafts and historic villages known for their distinctive gassho-zukuri farmhouses or visit one of Japan’s most iconic Edo-period gardens;
- Sado Island: Set off the coast of Niigata, this island is often described as a miniature Japan. It is home to striking coastal scenery and centuries-old cultural traditions.
Throughout the voyage, Adventure Canada’s expert expedition team—including naturalists, historians, and cultural specialists—offer lectures, guided excursions, and meaningful opportunities to engage with local communities. The program emphasizes learning, connection, and responsible travel, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainability and cultural respect.
The 2027 departure builds on the success of previous sailings, offering travellers a unique way to experience Japan — by sea, by story, and by connection. The 12-day journey starts and ends in Osaka and is priced from US$9,410 per person.
