In a thrilling second One-Day International (ODI) at Sophia Gardens on July 16, 2026, England squared off against a formidable India side in a high-stakes encounter. Needing a victory to stay alive in the three-match series, the hosts delivered a clinical performance, chasing down India’s total with four wickets in hand and 35 balls to spare. The triumph effectively levels the series 1-1, setting up a highly anticipated winner-takes-all grand finale at Lord’s. The undisputed anchor of England’s successful run chase was veteran batter Joe Root, who walked away with the Player of the Match honours despite missing out on a personal milestone in dramatic fashion.

Joe Root reveals his reaction to falling short of a hundred in the second ODI

The former England captain produced a masterclass in modern ODI accumulation, finishing unbeaten on 99* off 133 deliveries. Stranded just one run away from a well-deserved century, Root watched from the non-striker’s end as bowling all-rounder Gus Atkinson smashed the winning boundary in the 45th over.

Despite missing out on what would have been a memorable ton, a grounded Root insisted that personal milestones pale in comparison to team success. Reflecting on the final moments of the chase, he emphasized that a defeat would have been significantly more painful than finishing just short of three figures.

“It would’ve felt a lot worse if we’d lost. That’s why you play to win. And for us to have that carrot ahead of us, winning at Lord’s and the chance to beat the number one team in the world, is really exciting,” Root stated after the match.

Root highlighted the value of grinding out a victory using a more traditional, gritty approach, contrasting it with England’s trademark high-octane style. He noted that learning to ‘win ugly’ provides the squad with invaluable experience under pressure, crucial preparation as the team builds toward the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. With the series hanging in the balance, the veteran batter expressed immense excitement for the upcoming decider at Lord’s against the world’s top-ranked ODI team.

“I’m delighted that we found a way of doing it ugly and doing it in a way that probably doesn’t suit a lot of the other guys and what they’re used to doing and how they’re used to playing. It shapes us up really well with what’s to come, and a great experience of a big pressure game ahead of a World Cup in 2027,” he added.

Root’s masterful 99 steers England to a convincing win over India

Earlier in the day, India won the toss and elected to bat, managing to post a total of 233 before being bowled out in 44 overs. The visitors looked destined for a far more imposing score, comfortable at 178/3 thanks to resilient, identical half-centuries from Virat Kohli (65 off 66 balls) and Shreyas Iyer (66 off 71 balls). However, England’s pace attack engineered a devastating batting collapse. India lost their final seven wickets for a mere 55 runs. Speedsters Jofra Archer (3/47) and Gus Atkinson (3/50) ripped through the middle and lower order, while Saqib Mahmood chipped in with two crucial breakthroughs.

England’s response got off to a rocky start as opening bowler Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ben Duckett for a duck on the very first ball of the innings. When Prasidh Krishna removed Jacob Bethell shortly after, England found themselves reeling at 8/2. Root then took complete control, stabilizing the innings alongside supporting cameos from Sam Curran (26) and Will Jacks (30).

Despite disciplined spells from the Indian bowling unit, Root’s calculated knock, featuring nine boundaries, kept the required run rate under perfect control. Combined with Atkinson’s explosive late cameo of 23* off 16 balls, England comfortably crossed the line at 235/6, ensuring a blockbuster finish to the series.
