England and Pakistan are set to face each other in the first Test of the Pakistan tour of England 2026 at Headingley in Leeds, beginning on August 19. The opening Test comes at an important stage for both teams, with England entering a new phase under Joe Root and Pakistan looking to build on their recent improvement in the longest format.

England have gone through significant changes following the retirement of Ben Stokes from Test cricket and the departure of head coach Brendon McCullum. Root has taken over as full-time captain, while Marcus Trescothick will oversee the team during this series before Stephen Fleming takes charge later in the year. Pakistan, meanwhile, ended a difficult run of overseas results with an eight-wicket win over the West Indies in Trinidad. They also defeated a County Select XI by seven wickets in their warm-up game, with Saud Shakeel scoring an unbeaten century.

Leeds Weather Forecast for the 1st Test

The five-day forecast for Leeds points towards mild late-summer conditions, with occasional light rain showers expected mainly during the first two days. The weather should become progressively more settled as the Test moves towards the weekend.

    • Day 1 (Wednesday, August 19): Sunny intervals and passing light showers are expected, with temperatures reaching around 19°C. Moderate westerly winds could provide additional assistance to the fast bowlers.
    • Day 2 (Thursday, August 20): Similar conditions are forecast, with sunny spells interrupted by isolated light showers. Temperatures could reach around 17°C, while a gentle northwest wind is expected.
    • Day 3 (Friday, August 21): Mostly cloudy conditions are likely, although the risk of rain remains low. Lighter winds should allow for longer uninterrupted periods of play, with temperatures around 17°C.
    • Day 4 (Saturday, August 22): Clearer conditions are expected, with long sunny intervals and minimal cloud cover. Temperatures should reach approximately 18°C.
    • Day 5 (Sunday, August 23): Bright and sunny weather is forecast for the final day, with no significant threat of rain and temperatures touching 19°C.

    Headingley Pitch Report

The Headingley surface is expected to offer an intriguing contest between bat and ball. Its unusual composition of roughly equal parts sand, silt and clay should provide good carry and bounce early in the Test, while the atmospheric conditions could give fast bowlers considerable swing.

The high sand content is expected to produce a firm surface with true bounce, allowing pacers to generate extra pace and bounce. Overhead conditions during the opening sessions could further assist seamers, making the start of each innings particularly challenging for batters. As the match progresses, however, the pitch is expected to slow down considerably. The clay base should prevent the surface from breaking up too quickly, but spinners could eventually find more grip, lower bounce and sharper turn.

The toss could therefore be important, with the captain winning it likely to consider batting first if conditions appear favourable. Overall, Headingley should provide early assistance for the pace bowlers before gradually becoming more helpful to spinners as the Test progresses.
