The Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Jacob Middleton of Wainwright, Alberta in a trade with the Minnesota Wild on Thursday according to Eric Francis of Rogers Sportsnet. In addition to Middleton, the Flames are receiving a third round pick in the 2027 National Hockey League Entry Draft, a fourth round pick in the 2028 NHL Entry Draft, and a second round pick in the 2029 NHL Entry Draft. The Wild will be receiving Blake Coleman and Olli Maatta.
Middleton is joining his third National Hockey League team. He has previously played four seasons with the San Jose Sharks from 2018 to 2022, and five seasons with the Minnesota Wild from 2022 to 2026.
In 2025-26, Middleton had two goals and 14 assists for 16 points. He was a +2 with 76 penalty minutes, 62 shots on goal, 117 blocked shots, 87 hits, 10 takeaways and 46 giveaways.
This is the second time in Middleton’s career he has been traded. On March 21, 2022 he was traded from the Sharks to the Wild for goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen and the fifth round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. With the 140th overall pick, the Sharks selected defenseman Jake Furlong of Labrador City, Newfoundland.
Middleton is the second defenseman the Flames acquired via trade in the 2026 offseason. They also made a deal with the New Jersey Devils where they acquired Simon Nemec.
