Canadian Ella Jansen to give 400m freestyle a go

Ella Jansen won 3 titles at nationals and looks to peak at Commonwealth Games

Paris 2024 Olympian Ella Jansen was Swimming Canada’s Breakout Swimmer of the Year in 2022, but with Commonwealth Games on the horizon she’s really looking to make her mark on the world stage. Both alum of Etobicoke Swim, Jansen and host, Brittany MacLean Campbell talk trials, the Games and look ahead to LA 2028.

To start off the session, Canadian Ella Jansen will give the 400-metre freestyle a go – headlined by Australian star Lani Pallister, who is going for the distance triple gold (400, 800, and 1500) here in Glasgow.

Canadian youngster Madison Kryger just snuck into the 200 backstroke final, and she’ll swim out of Lane 8, hoping to move up a few places. It was a bit of a slower pace across the board; Kryger’s best time is faster than the top seed swam in prelims, so anything can happen in the final.

Visually impaired athlete Hunter Helberg, from Fort McMurray, Alta., is making the most of this opportunity to race at the Commonwealth Games. Classified as S11 but swimming up two classes in the S13 100 freestyle – he’s through to the final after a solid morning performance.

After an extended break for a lane-line malfunction, Canadian record holder Oliver Dawson patiently got his chance to race beside world-record holder in the 100 breaststroke, Adam Ramsay-Peaty of Great Britain. The top 16 advanced, and the Canadian appeared comfortable in his first race. Dawson will have Lane 3 in the first semifinal where he’ll aim to reach the top 8. Speaking of semifinals, Benjamin Winterborn of Kingston, Ont., moved on in the 50 butterfly.
