The debate surrounding the Indian cricket team’s T20 International captaincy has intensified following a turbulent Indian Premier League 2026 season. Despite leading India to recent heights on the global stage, whispers of a leadership change within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have surfaced, fueled largely by a dip in individual form. However, prominent cricket minds are urging the selectors to look at the bigger picture, warning against knee-jerk reactions that could disrupt the squad’s core culture ahead of major upcoming tournaments.
Former selection chief calls on BCCI to persist with Suryakumar Yadav as captain in T20Is
A prominent voice has entered the discussion, strongly advising the BCCI against removing Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I captaincy. Former chief selector MSK Prasad believes that stripping the dynamic batter of his leadership role right now would be a counterproductive move for Indian cricket. Prasad emphasized that the team currently lacks a ready-made, long-term captaincy solution waiting in the wings, and frequent changes at the top could severely damage the team’s growing culture and stability.
“One of the biggest reasons to retain Suryakumar is leadership continuity. At present, India do not have a ready-made long-term T20 captaincy solution waiting in the wings. Changing captains frequently can disturb the direction and culture of the side. India needs stability, clarity, and a transition plan rather than sudden reactions based on temporary form,” Prasad wrote for Cricbuzz.
Instead of an abrupt change, Prasad advocates for a structured transition plan. He suggested that the team management and selectors should use the next six months to actively groom the next generation of T20 leaders under the current skipper’s guidance. Rising stars and experienced hands like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Ishan Kishan could be rotated as deputy leaders across different series and playing conditions. According to the former selection chief, this method builds crucial leadership depth without creating unnecessary pressure or instability. He warned the board against making emotional decisions based on short-term fluctuations, noting that players with his rare match-winning skillset and leadership qualities are exceptionally hard to find.
“Players like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan can be developed as future T20 captains for India. Over the next six months, these players can be made deputy leaders to Suryakumar Yadav in different series and conditions. This would allow India to gradually build leadership depth without creating unnecessary pressure or instability,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav’s dismal run in IPL 2026
The primary catalyst for the sudden scrutiny on leadership is a highly uncharacteristic and difficult run in the latest IPL season. Serving as a crucial pillar for the Mumbai Indians, the explosive right-hander struggled to find his trademark rhythm and consistency throughout the tournament. The pressure of maintaining a high strike rate while anchoring a fluctuating middle order clearly took a toll on his overall output.
An average hovering just above 20 is a stark contrast to the lofty standards the world’s top-ranked T20 batter has set for himself over the years. While a strike rate of 147.54 remains respectable for most, it lacks the devastating, game-changing impact usually expected from him. With only two half-centuries across 13 innings, this prolonged patch of poor form has given critics ammunition. Nevertheless, cricket purists maintain that form is temporary, and sacrificing his established international captaincy over a single tough domestic season could do the national side more harm than good.
