As India prepare for their one-off Test against Afghanistan, head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that belief remains strong within the camp despite the team’s challenging start to the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. While India’s road to the final has become increasingly difficult, Gambhir insists the players have the talent, determination, and hunger needed to turn things around and compete for the coveted title.

The upcoming Test may not count towards the WTC standings, but it comes at a crucial stage as India look to build momentum before a demanding stretch of red-ball cricket later this year.

Gautam Gambhir on India’s WTC final hopes

India’s campaign in the ongoing WTC cycle has been far from ideal. The team has managed just four wins from nine Tests and currently sits sixth in the standings. However, Gambhir is refusing to be weighed down by the points table and believes there is enough quality in the squad to mount a strong comeback.

Speaking ahead of the Afghanistan clash, the former India opener said the dressing room remains united in its ambition to qualify for the final and ultimately lift the trophy.

According to Gambhir, setbacks are part of any long campaign, but they do not change the confidence the team has in its abilities. He emphasized that everyone in the squad continues to believe India can emerge as champions despite suffering disappointing results in recent series.

“Very optimistic. We are always optimistic. Till you have the chance to qualify for the final, we are always optimistic. We know the kind of talent we have. I don’t think there is any reason not to believe that we can’t win the World Test Championship. That is not just me, but everyone in the dressing room believes. We can have one-odd bad series here and there, but we know the kind of talent and how much hunger we have in the dressing room,” Gambhir said.

Transition phase has tested India’s resilience

India’s current position reflects a period of significant transition in Test cricket. Following the retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, the team has entered a new era under the leadership group of Shubman Gill and KL Rahul.

The transition has not been smooth. India missed out on the WTC final for the first time after suffering a 1-3 series defeat in Australia and enduring a shocking home whitewash against New Zealand in 2024. In the new cycle, they managed a respectable 2-2 draw in England but were later stunned by South Africa, who secured a 2-0 series victory on Indian soil.

Despite those setbacks, Gambhir believes the rebuilding process is progressing in the right direction and that the squad’s young players are gaining valuable experience.

    Tough challenges await India

The road to the WTC final will not get any easier. India’s schedule includes a two-Test series in Sri Lanka in August, followed by another two-match Test series in New Zealand later in the year.

The biggest challenge, however, will arrive early next year when Australia tour India for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The high-profile contest is expected to play a major role in shaping the WTC standings and could determine India’s chances of reaching the final.

With limited room for error, every series from this point onward will carry enormous significance.

    Full-strength approach against Afghanistan

Although the Afghanistan Test does not contribute to the WTC table, Gambhir stressed the importance of maintaining continuity and competitive standards. India are expected to field a strong lineup led by captain Gill, with Rahul serving as vice-captain. While senior stars Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested, Mohammed Siraj is likely to lead the pace attack. The spin department features Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Manav Suthar, and Harsh Dubey, providing India with a balanced bowling unit.

For Gambhir and his team, the Afghanistan Test represents more than a standalone fixture—it is an opportunity to strengthen combinations, build confidence, and keep their World Test Championship dream alive.
