Gayle King recently opened up about an unfortunate incident during her marriage to William G. Bumpus. Since then, her ex has expressed his regrets in a statement. This notably isn’t the first time Bumpus has apologized for what happened.
Gayle King Recently Opened Up About The Story On The Call Her Daddy Podcast
As a journalist, King is known for her work with CBS News. She is a co-host on CBS Mornings, previously serving the same role on CBS This Morning. She is also an editor-at-large for Oprah Daily.
In her personal life, King was married to William G. Bumpus from 1982 to 1993. Recently, King made headlines after opening up about an unfortunate encounter during her marriage.
On the Call Her Daddy podcast, King recounted coming home in June 1990 with her kids after a flight was cancelled. As King recounted, “He comes flying out of the room. He’s got a towel on, and he goes, ‘You can’t come in!’” She shared that she responded, “What do you mean I can’t come in? What are you talking about?”
Bumpus admitted that someone was there, a revelation that caused King to search the house and find the other woman. This woman has never been identified, but King described her as a friend. As King shared, “I said, ‘I can’t believe that you are here and that you are doing this.’ I even said – I sounded so pitiful – ‘I thought we were friends.’”
King Has Recounted The Story Before Over The Years, Including With Vanity Fair
According to Radar Online, since the interview was released, Bumpus publicly apologized for what happened. While noting that “the pain” was caused “decades ago,” he admitted, “Those actions were mine.”
As the outlet noted, this isn’t the first time that Bumpus apologized over what happened. Back in 2006, King recalled the incident on her radio show. Later, she admitted that she wasn’t a fan of the woman “who I caught naked with” her ex with Vanity Fair in 2016.

Following this, Bumpus claimed that he was “haunted” by his “life-altering choice… that dramatically changed all our lives.” He continued, “I have nothing but the utmost respect for Gayle and how she handled herself with grace.”
Since The Story Came Out, King Has Also Responded To Her Ex’s Apology
“Despite the situation, she kept our children, as well as my relationship and involvement with them, as a clear priority. Gayle was a great wife, an excellent mother, and a fantastic co-parent. I am eternally grateful for all that she has done and continues to do to enrich my life and the lives of our incredible adult children.”

As noted by TMZ, King herself has responded to these apologies from Bumpus. At the time, she expressed surprise that he was even talking about the story, feeling that he rarely talks. She shared, “So I was surprised, but I can also say I appreciated what he had to say.”
King also noted, “The reason why I can talk about it so candidly, to be honest with you, is because it has been so much time that has passed, and I’m in a really great place, and so is he.” Although she was surprised that he released a statement, she shared that the two still keep in touch.
