A comment from a Google executive is now suggesting that Googlebooks could have a more affordable model coming.
In an interview with Chrome Unboxed, John Maletis, Vice President of Google and GM of ChromeOS, revealed that while the first versions of the all-new ChromeOS laptops will aim to be more premium, cheaper models are also being planned.
“We’ve always been about enabling technology and the ability to be productive and access information regardless of your price point,” Malentis said. “So over time we will come down, but these first devices are super premium.”
It sounds like Google is essentially doing what they did with the Pixelbooks, but with the Google name attached instead. With the Pixelbooks pretty much dead (the Pixelbook Go isn’t in stock on Google’s online store), this could be Google’s next attempt to simplify its laptop lineup and bring everything under one name.
However, Maletis has confirmed that new Chromebooks will continue to launch through next year, and that existing devices will continue to receive long-term software updates. Alternatively, Google will allow some Chromebooks to migrate to the Googlebook experience.
Although it sounds like the Googlebook is becoming the company’s long-term laptop strategy, I’m not going to be planning the Chromebook’s funeral quite yet, as I was all in on the Pixelbook replacing the Chromebook before it flopped.
