Hayden Panettiere’s ‘Heroes’ Dad Exposes ‘Predatory’ Treatment

Jack Coleman is remembering Hayden Panettiere as a gifted performer whose vulnerability made her extraordinary on screen while leaving her exposed to the darker side of fame. The actor, who played Panettiere’s on-screen father in NBC’s “Heroes,” shared an emotional tribute following her death at age 36. Coleman celebrated their two-decade bond while condemning the paparazzi and reporters who pursued her when she was still a teenager.

Coleman shared photographs of himself and Panettiere from their years together on “Heroes” in an Instagram tribute. “I’m heartbroken. I couldn’t begin to put my thoughts into words until now, and they will be inadequate,” he began.

The actors met while filming the pilot for “Heroes,” which premiered in 2006. Panettiere played Claire Bennet, a teenage cheerleader with the ability to heal from otherwise fatal injuries, while Coleman portrayed her protective adoptive father, Noah Bennet.

“I’ve loved Hayden since day one of the pilot of ‘Heroes,’ 20 years ago, when she introduced herself by shouting ‘daddy’ and throwing her arms around me. From that day on, she called me daddio. She was Haydini, because she was a magician,” Coleman recalled.

The Actress Faced Inappropriate Questions As A Teenager

Coleman also reflected on how quickly Panettiere’s profile grew after “Heroes” became a hit. “By 17 she was #1 on IMDB Pro. She was routinely asked obnoxious questions, mostly some version of ‘when are you going to go off the rails?’” he wrote. “Today, we’d recognize those questions for the misogynistic provocations they were.”

The questions placed Panettiere inside a damaging narrative frequently imposed on young female celebrities during the 2000s. Rather than concentrating exclusively on her work, interviewers seemingly anticipated that she would eventually experience a public breakdown.

The actor reserved some of his strongest criticism for the photographers who followed Panettiere away from work. “She was hunted. Everywhere she went, there were photographers with 300 millimeter lenses,” Coleman wrote, explaining that the distant lenses could transform even innocent moments into photographs that appeared suspicious or sensational.

Coleman then recalled an incident in which photographers allegedly followed Panettiere to his home. “Once, when she came to our house, paparazzi hid in the bushes behind our yard and drove onto neighbors’ lawns,” he said. “They were predatory. No one, especially a teenager, should be targeted that way.”

His account describes a level of intrusion that went beyond photographing Panettiere at premieres or other public events. According to Coleman, photographers invaded residential spaces simply to capture images of the young actress during her private time.

Coleman did not suggest that the paparazzi were responsible for Panettiere’s later personal struggles or her death. Instead, his tribute criticized an entertainment culture that treated a teenage actress’s privacy as something available for public consumption.

Coleman concluded his tribute by acknowledging the complicated relationship between Panettiere’s emotional sensitivity and her talent. “Today I’m filled with sorrow and regret. And anger. But that’s for another time,” he wrote.

The actor said he wanted to focus on the person he knew rather than allow his anger to overshadow her memory. “Right now I want to remember an extraordinary young woman who was blessed and cursed. She was vulnerable. She felt everything,” he wrote. “It made her a remarkable actor and susceptible to the heartache and thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.”

Panettiere’s ability to convey vulnerability helped make Claire one of the most memorable characters on “Heroes.” The character’s physical invincibility often contrasted with her emotional isolation, fear and desire for an ordinary life.

That complexity helped establish Panettiere as one of the faces of the NBC superhero drama during its four-season run from 2006 until 2010. Coleman later returned as Noah Bennet for the 2015 follow-up miniseries, “Heroes Reborn.”

Coleman is among several members of the “Heroes” family who have honored Panettiere since her death. Sendhil Ramamurthy, who portrayed Mohinder Suresh, remembered Panettiere for defending background actors who were allegedly treated poorly. He also recalled how she made an effort to learn the names of crew members working behind the scenes.

“Heroes” creator Tim Kring similarly celebrated her professionalism and natural acting ability in an essay for Variety. “Hayden was a true team player, which was important for a show with a large ensemble cast. She was levelheaded beyond her years as a person, with an almost savant-like quality about her work,” Kring wrote.

He also described Panettiere as a “singularly talented” performer who could uncover drama, humor and emotional depth within a scene.

Together, the tributes portray Panettiere as someone who cared about the people around her despite facing extraordinary pressure herself.

The Investigation Into Hayden Panettiere’s Death Remains Ongoing

Panettiere died in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. The Greenville Police Department said its preliminary investigation found no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office completed an autopsy and reported that no visible injuries or trauma contributed to her death. Her official cause and manner of death remain pending further testing, including toxicology results.

Coleman’s tribute arrives as authorities continue their work, but his focus remained on the friend and on-screen daughter he knew for 20 years.

By speaking about the invasive treatment Panettiere endured as a teenager, he also turned his grief into a broader warning about the cost of treating young performers as targets rather than people.
