When it comes to the intense, high-pressure world of the Indian Premier League (IPL), few teams have built a narrative as intriguing as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Established in 2013 following the termination of the Deccan Chargers franchise, the Orange Army quickly established a reputation for defending microscopic totals, nurturing elite bowling units, and executing under the radar.

Over the years, the Hyderabad-based franchise has transitioned from a bowling-heavy defensive unit under David Warner and Kane Williamson to a ferocious, ultra-aggressive batting behemoth engineered by modern tacticians. However, regular season consistency is one thing, and the ruthless domain of the IPL knockouts is entirely another. Navigating through qualifiers and eliminators requires a distinct blend of tactical flexibility and psychological steel. To understand their legacy, we have to trace their history through the high-stakes playoff stages.

Here’s how Sunrisers Hyderabad have fared in the IPL playoffs

    IPL 2013: Fourth Place

In their debut season, Sunrisers Hyderabad took the tournament by storm. Led primarily by Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara and later Cameron White, the team relied heavily on a fierce bowling attack featuring Dale Steyn, Amit Mishra, and a young Bhuvneshwar Kumar. They defied all expectations to qualify for the playoffs in their very first year of existence. However, their maiden playoff journey was short-lived. Facing the Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator at Delhi, SRH fought hard but lacked the batting depth to cross the line. Batting first, Hyderabad struggled to a modest 132/7. Despite an economical performance from their bowlers, Brad Hodge steer Rajasthan home with an unbeaten 54, ending the debutants’ fairytale campaign in a tight four-wicket loss.

    IPL 2016: Champions

The 2016 season remains the crown jewel in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s history. Finishing third in the group stage under the relentless captaincy of Warner, SRH had to take the longest, most difficult road to the trophy, winning three knockout games in a row. They started their rampage by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by 22 runs in the Eliminator, courtesy of an all-round show from Moises Henriques. Next, in Qualifier 2, Warner played one of the greatest knocks in IPL history, blasting an unbeaten 93 off 58 balls to haul his side from a precarious 84/5 to successfully chase down Gujarat Lions‘ 162. The final at Bengaluru against a peak Royal Challengers Bangalore remains iconic. SRH batted first and posted a mammoth 208/7, propelled by Warner’s 69 and Ben Cutting’s late-innings cameo. Despite a ferocious opening partnership between Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli that had RCB cruising at 114/0, Hyderabad’s trademark death bowling squeezed the host nation. Searing spells from Bhuvneshwar and Mustafizur Rahman induced a catastrophic collapse, handing SRH an 8-run victory and their maiden IPL title.

    IPL 2017: Fourth Place

Entering the tournament as defending champions, the Orange Army looked robust throughout the league stage, riding on Warner’s prolific run-scoring form. They safely secured a playoff berth by finishing fourth in the standings. However, their title defense came to a grinding halt in a rain-marred Eliminator against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Bengaluru. Batting first on a sluggish surface, SRH was restricted to a below-par 128/7 as KKR’s Nathan Coulter-Nile dismantled their top order. A massive rain delay completely shifted the game’s dynamics, resulting in a drastically revised DLS target of 48 runs in just 6 overs for KKR. Gautam Gambhir‘s calm composure guided Kolkata to a comfortable 7-wicket victory with four balls to spare, packing Hyderabad’s bags early.

    IPL 2018: Runners-up

With Warner missing the season due to external controversies, Williamson stepped up as captain and delivered a masterclass in leadership and batting. Under his calm guidance, SRH finished at the top of the points table, defending low totals at will with a bowling attack inspired by Rashid Khan. Their playoff run began with a heartbreaking loss to Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1, where Faf du Plessis played a magical knock to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Forced into Qualifier 2, Rashid Khan put on a legendary all-round masterclass against KKR, smashing a quick-fire 34 before taking 3 wickets and claiming two crucial catches to push SRH into the final. Unfortunately, the grand finale at Mumbai saw them running into an unstoppable Shane Watson. Despite posting a highly competitive 178/6, Sunrisers were completely blown away by Watson’s unbeaten, brutal 117-run century, finishing the year as valiant runners-up.

    IPL 2019: Fourth Place

The 2019 season was a chaotic ride for the franchise. They created history by becoming the first-ever team in the IPL to qualify for the playoffs with just 12 points, sneaking through on a superior net run rate. The explosive opening combination of Warner and Jonny Bairstow carried the team, but both departed for international duties before the playoffs. A depleted SRH ran into the Delhi Capitals in the Eliminator at Visakhapatnam. Batting first, Hyderabad posted a respectable 162/8, driven by Manish Pandey and Williamson. The defense was incredibly spirited, taking the match to the absolute wire. However, a blistering cameo from Rishabh Pant shifted the momentum, and Delhi crossed the line with two wickets and just one ball remaining, eliminating SRH in a nail-biting finish.

    IPL 2020: Third Place

Staged in the United Arab Emirates due to global constraints, the 2020 edition saw SRH pull off a spectacular late-season resurgence, winning their final three league games to finish third on the table. In the Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the bowling unit suffocated Kohli’s men, restricting them to 131/7. Williamson’s tactical brilliance and an unbeaten half-century anchored a tricky chase, steering SRH to a 6-wicket win. Their campaign eventually hit a wall in Qualifier 2 against a powerful Mumbai Indians-chasing Delhi Capitals unit. Chasing a formidable target of 190, Williamson’s fighting 67 and Abdul Samad’s brief fireworks gave the fans hope, but Marcus Stoinis’ multi-dimensional brilliance restricted SRH to 172/8, ending their campaign just one step short of the finale.

    IPL 2024: Runners-up

After three dismal years at the bottom of the table, the franchise underwent a massive identity shift in 2024. Appointing Australian heavyweight Pat Cummins as captain and bringing in coach Daniel Vettori, SRH completely revolutionized T20 batting. They shattered historical records, consistently posting scores north of 250, driven by the explosive opening tandem of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. Finishing second in the league, they suffered a heavy defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 1. However, they bounced back spectacularly in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals in Chennai. Shahbaz Ahmed’s unexpected spin masterclass choked Rajasthan, guiding SRH to a comprehensive 36-run win. Regrettably, the final proved to be an absolute nightmare. Facing KKR once again on a tricky pitch, the high-flying batting unit collapsed out of nowhere for a miserable 113 runs. Kolkata chased it down in just 10.3 overs, leaving SRH with their second silver medal.
