Ty Pennington Shared That His Mother Had Been Dealing With Respiratory Issues
Pennington is famous for his work on a number of home renovation shows. These include This include Trading Spaces, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Battle on the Beach.
In his personal life, Pennington married Kellee Merrell in 2021. He is also the caregiver of his mother, Yvonne.
Having separated from Ty’s father when he was young, Yvonne spent years raising him and his brother as a single parent. In fact, Ty later obtained his “Pennington” surname from his stepfather.
Recently, the HGTV star opened up about his mother’s health struggles. Speaking with TV Insider, he shared, “My mom has been dealing with respiratory issues for almost as long as I can remember. She was diagnosed with bronchiectasis almost 20 years ago. But for nearly 40 years, we weren’t even sure. She basically had COPD and asthma.”
“But what’s kind of crazy is sometimes you may have something more than you even realize. And so, what I didn’t realize is that my mom actually had bronchiectasis.”
Pennington Mused That There Was Once A Time When He Only Saw His Mother Once A Year
Giving advice to fans, Pennington advised going to a pulmonologist if you have continuing symptoms and get recurring lung infections. He also felt that he had a similar approach to health as he does with his home renovation projects.
As Pennington explained, “If there’s something wrong with it, you don’t necessarily want to paint over it. You want to look behind the walls, check the foundation, take a deeper look, and talk to an expert that can tell you what’s going on.”
Pennington also shared that he wanted to spread awareness for bronchiectasis, as well as overall respiratory health, through Insmed’s Suspect BE campaign. He continued, “We’ve got a campaign called SuspectBE.com, which is really advising people. If the symptoms keep coming back, if they don’t seem to be getting better, then maybe get a CT scan, talk to a pulmonologist, and just find out what’s going on.”
Talking about their current situation, Ty also expressed that he and his mother have grown closer over the years, with him even building a house for her in Florida, to help him look after her. He noted that there was a time when he only saw his mother around Christmas.
However, the star also acknowledged the hard times her condition has caused, such as making it hard for her to laugh. He mused, “My mom, that’s why I think she inspires me, because she does find the joy in life. And I think laughter is the key to life. That’s why we want to constantly laugh about it. But yeah, living with her is never a dull moment, that’s for sure.”
