Bedtime magnesium sprays have moved from niche wellness circles onto shelves at Target, Walmart, CVS and Ulta, promising deeper sleep without the stomach issues of oral supplements. But doctors and dermatologists say the science behind magnesium spray is thinner than the marketing suggests.

Does Magnesium Spray Actually Work for Sleep?

Experts say magnesium spray likely does not deliver enough magnesium through the skin to meaningfully improve sleep, and much of the perceived benefit comes from the calming ritual rather than the mineral itself.

Yoshua Quiones, MD, a board-certified internal medicine specialist at Medical Offices of Manhattan, told Good Housekeeping he is not strongly in favor of the product because more clinical data is needed. “There’s no solid evidence that magnesium is fully absorbed through the skin. For now, I recommend sticking with oral magnesium,” he said. Denise M. Millstine, MD, director of integrative medicine and health at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, told Mayo Clinic that transdermal absorption of magnesium is “quite low, or at the very least inefficient, so using magnesium as a spray isn’t recommended for sleep.”

Search interest in sleep supplements has spiked as more people look for alternatives to prescription sleep aids and endless doomscrolling. Below is what dietitians, physicians and sleep researchers actually recommend, drawing on specialists cited by Eating Well, Johns Hopkins, WebMD, the Sleep Foundation and Yahoo Health. How Does Magnesium Spray Fit Into a Bedtime Routine?

Cosmetic chemists say magnesium sprays work best as a sensory add-on to a bedtime routine.

“From a scientific standpoint, they function more as a mineral salt spray with local sensory effects, cooling, soothing, hydrating, rather than a proven systemic delivery mechanism,” Krupa Koestline, founder and chief cosmetic chemist of KKT Labs, told Vogue. She recommends oral magnesium as the foundation and sprays for extra muscle relaxation at night. The act of misting the skin, massaging it in and slowing your breathing creates a behavioral cue that shifts the nervous system into a rest mode, which may explain why users report better sleep.

What Does the Research Say About Transdermal Magnesium Absorption?

Clinical evidence for magnesium crossing the skin barrier remains limited, and small studies have not shown statistically significant increases in blood magnesium from topical use.

A 2016 study from the University of Queensland used multiphoton microscopy to show magnesium ions penetrate human skin primarily through hair follicles. A 2017 study tested a daily magnesium cream delivering 56 mg for about two weeks and found blood magnesium levels rose roughly 8 percent, but the change was not statistically significant. Nicholas Theodosakis, a dermatologist and researcher at Harvard University, told NPR, “The problem with this is that the skin is a barrier, not a sponge.”

How Much Magnesium Spray Should You Use Safely?

There is no established maximum dose for topical magnesium, and experts say to stop using it if skin irritation develops.

Joaquin Villegas, MD, a family medicine physician with UTHealth Houston, told Health that maximum dosages for topical magnesium have not been set, while oral supplementation is capped at 350 milligrams daily. “Some patients can experience skin irritation with too much use of topical magnesium, so if a patient develops itching, skin dryness or burning sensation, stop using the supplement,” Villegas said. Robert Glatter, MD, an emergency medicine physician at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital, added that “there is no accepted or definitive regimen to recommend to patients who decide to use topically applied magnesium.”

Is Magnesium Spray Better Than Oral Magnesium for Sleep?

Doctors generally recommend oral magnesium over spray for sleep because pills and powders deliver more reliable absorption into the bloodstream.

Villegas said magnesium applied to the skin is generally not absorbed as effectively as magnesium taken by mouth. Glatter agreed, noting that “the premise of applying magnesium topically is that it can bypass the digestive system, and therefore be directly absorbed into the bloodstream by the dermis,” but prior research shows the skin’s limited absorptive capacity is a real barrier, especially for patients treating a magnesium deficiency. For most people looking to sleep better, doctors say an oral supplement paired with a consistent wind-down habit will do more than a nightly mist.
