Since Donald Trump returned to the White House, federal agents responsible for enforcing immigration laws have been involved in at least 29 shootings, according to an analysis by the Gun Violence Data Hub. At least eight of those incidents resulted in one fatality, although some sources put the number higher by including cases in which Border Patrol agents or other divisions of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were also involved.

The cases have drawn attention because, in several of them, authorities claimed that the victims had used their vehicles as weapons to try to run over agents—a version of events that was later questioned by family members, witnesses, or videos released during the investigations. On Tuesday, ICE ordered a suspension of vehicle stops following the deaths of two immigrants in Texas and Maine over the past week.

This is a tally of the people who have been shot and killed by federal agents during Trump’s second term.

Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero: The 26-year-old colombian killed in Maine

The most recent incident occurred on July 13, 2026, in Biddeford, Maine. Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian, died after being shot by an ICE agent during an immigration raid. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the agent opened fire after the man attempted to flee and rammed his vehicle into the officers.

However, witnesses stated that the car did not appear to be heading toward the agents. Senator Angus King’s office also reported that Guerrero was not the original target of the operation, while immigrant advocacy groups noted that he had authorization to work in the United States and possessed a Social Security number.

The FBI and the Maine Attorney General’s Office are continuing their investigation into the case.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo: The mexican worker who was on his way to work

Six days earlier, on July 7, an ICE agent shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican man who had been living in the United States for more than three decades. Salgado Araujo was driving a pickup truck with members of his construction crew on their way to work when he was stopped by federal agents in Houston.

DHS claimed that the driver attempted to ram the agents with the vehicle and that the officer fired in self-defense. However, family members and attorneys for the passengers rejected that account and demanded an independent investigation. The Mexican man died while being transported to the hospital.

Silverio Villegas González: The cook shot dead after dropping off a child at daycare

One of the first shootings targeting migrants during Trump’s second administration occurred in September 2025, when Silverio Villegas González, a 38-year-old Mexican cook, was killed during a traffic stop in the suburbs of Chicago.

Authorities claimed that the man attempted to flee and dragged an officer with his vehicle, prompting the use of a firearm. However, videos obtained later showed the officer walking around the scene and downplaying the injuries that had initially been described as serious by DHS. The investigation remains open.

Renée Good and Alex Pretti: The deaths that sparked a wave of protests

The first weeks of the year were marked by two deaths that sparked protests across the country. On January 7, 2026, Renée Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, was killed when an ICE agent fired at her vehicle during protests against Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. The government claimed that the officer opened fire because the car posed a threat. However, videos released later appeared to show that Good was turning the steering wheel to drive away from the agent when he fired.

A little over two weeks later, on January 24, 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti died after being shot during another protest related to immigration raids in Minneapolis. In this case, the shot was fired by a Border Patrol agent, not by ICE.

Footage captured by witnesses contradicted part of the authorities’ initial account and sparked investigations and questions about transparency regarding the use of force by federal agencies.

Rubén Ray Martínez: A U.S. citizen whose case came to light months later

In March 2025, Rubén Ray Martínez, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, died after being shot during an operation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The operation remained virtually unknown until documents were released months later through a lawsuit filed under the Freedom of Information Act.

Authorities claimed that Martínez intentionally ran over a federal agent, but his family said state investigators informed them that video footage of the incident contradicted that account. Democratic members of Congress subsequently called for an independent investigation.

Other deaths related to the immigration crackdown

In addition to those killed by immigration agents’ gunfire, the intensification of immigration operations has also been linked to other deaths. Among them is Jaime Alanís, a Mexican farmworker who died after falling from the roof of a greenhouse while trying to hide during a raid in California.

There is also the case of Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, a Guatemalan man who was struck and killed by a car while crossing a highway during an immigration operation, and that of Josué Castro Rivera, a Honduran man who died under similar circumstances in Virginia.
