The second T20I between Ireland and India at Belfast on June 28, 2026, will go down in history, but for all the wrong reasons for the Men in Blue. In a thrilling encounter that went down to the very last ball, Ireland pulled off a sensational one-run victory to secure a historic series sweep. However, amid the sting of the defeat, the loudest talking point surrounding the Indian camp remained the omission of 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

India coach breaks silence on why Vaibhav Suryavanshi was denied his T20I debut

Following India’s unexpected 0-2 series defeat, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the growing frustration regarding Suryavanshi’s absence from the playing XI. While acknowledging the teenager’s immense talent, Ten Doeschate emphasized that the team management believes in backing their established players before introducing fresh faces.

“He (Suryavanshi) is absolutely ready to play international cricket, there is no doubt about that, but also, Sanju Samson is a guy who went a long way to win us the World Cup three months ago. He has got a fairly good IPL, and it is important to give players confidence and message to the players, we want to give guys a long run in the team,” ten Doeschate stated during the post-match press conference.

Echoing the sentiments of batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, ten Doeschate added, “We are all excited to see Vaibhav play, but he has to go through the same process. There is certainly no question about how good he is.”

The clamor for Suryavanshi’s debut is entirely justified. The prodigy completely dominated this year’s IPL, amassing a staggering 776 runs at a jaw-dropping strike rate of over 230. His explosive performances earned him both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the Emerging Player of the Season awards.

Anticipation will now reach a fever pitch as India travels to England for a T20 series starting July 1 in Chester-le-Street. If Suryavanshi gets the nod during this tour, he will eclipse the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16, to become India’s youngest international cricketer.

Ireland completed a historic T20I whitewash over India

While the debate over team selection rages on, nothing can take away from Ireland’s monumental achievement in Belfast. Batting first, the hosts managed to post a competitive total of 154/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Harry Tector anchored the innings beautifully with a resilient 53 off 47 deliveries, while Ben Calitz provided crucial mid-innings impetus with a brisk 37 off 23 balls. For India, debutant Prince Yadav was the standout performer with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for just 22 runs in his 4 overs, while Harshit Rana and Shivam Dube kept things tight.

India’s chase got off to a catastrophic start, collapsing to 35/4 within the Powerplay. Both openers, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, were dismissed for golden ducks by an inspired Jai Moondra. Shreyas Iyer (10) and Ishan Kishan (12) failed to stabilize the innings, leaving India in deep trouble.

Tilak Varma fought valiantly, scoring a gritty 55 off 46 balls, and received minor support from Shivam Dube (20). However, Ireland’s bowling attack, led by Matt Hollard (3/26) and Moondra (3/32), kept chipping away at the wickets. Despite a late, entertaining cameo from Rana (21 off 10), India finished agonizingly short at 153/9, handing Ireland a famous 1-run victory and a historic 2-0 series whitewash.
