India wrapped up the ODI series against Afghanistan in emphatic fashion, cruising to a nine-wicket victory in the third ODI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium to seal a comprehensive 3-0 series sweep. After Prasidh Krishna dismantled the visitors with a brilliant five-wicket haul, Yashasvi Jaiswal produced a sparkling unbeaten century as India chased down 219 in just 28.4 overs.
Hashmatullah Shahidi’s century rescues Afghanistan after early collapse
Asked to bat first after winning the toss, Afghanistan endured a nightmare start as India’s pace attack reduced them to a precarious position in the opening overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah all departed cheaply, leaving the visitors struggling for momentum.
Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi then produced a determined innings under pressure, compiling an excellent 102 from 131 deliveries. His knock, decorated with 13 boundaries and a six, held the innings together and prevented a complete collapse. Azmatullah Omarzai provided valuable support with an aggressive 50 off 56 balls, striking five fours and two sixes to push Afghanistan past the 200-run mark.
Mohammad Nabi chipped in with 21 runs late in the innings, but regular wickets at the other end kept Afghanistan from building a bigger total. They were eventually dismissed for 218 in 44.2 overs.
Krishna was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with outstanding figures of 5 for 23 in 8.2 overs and repeatedly breaking crucial partnerships. Gurnoor Singh Brar, Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey claimed one wicket apiece, while Washington Sundar bowled economically without entering the wicket column.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma make light work of the chase
India’s pursuit of 219 turned into a batting exhibition as openers Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma dominated the Afghan bowling attack from the outset. The pair mixed elegant stroke play with calculated aggression, putting the visitors under immense pressure and virtually ending the contest within the first half of the chase.
Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 110 from just 86 deliveries, smashing 14 fours and three sixes in a fluent innings that showcased his confidence and range. Rohit complemented him perfectly with a brisk 79 off 69 balls, peppering the boundary with nine fours and three maximums before becoming Afghanistan’s lone wicket to fall.
After Rohit’s dismissal, Shreyas Iyer ensured there were no late hiccups, finishing unbeaten on 20 from 19 balls with two towering sixes as India reached 224 for 1 with more than 21 overs to spare.
Afghanistan’s bowlers found little assistance throughout the innings. Veteran all-rounder Nabi picked up the only wicket, while Rashid Khan, Fareed Ahmad Malik and the rest of the attack were unable to stem the flow of runs.

India dominate series from start to finish
The convincing win completed a perfect campaign for India, who had already secured victories by seven wickets in the opening ODI and by a massive 170-run margin in the second match. The hosts outperformed Afghanistan in every department across the three fixtures, underlining their depth and consistency.
Krishna was named Player of the Match for his match-winning spell that set up the victory, while Jaiswal’s unbeaten century capped a memorable chase.
