The 2026 Indian Premier League season has reached a fever pitch, but for the Mumbai Indians (MI), the temperature is rising for all the wrong reasons. Following a high-profile loss to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Thursday, MI’s campaign is officially in the doldrums, winning just two of their first seven matches. While the scoreboard tells a story of batting failure, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has pointed the finger squarely at the captaincy of Hardik Pandya, labeling his tactical decisions as fundamentally flawed.
Pandya, who was booed once again by the Wankhede faithful, is currently caught in a perfect storm of poor individual form and questionable leadership. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, expressed disbelief over Pandya’s decision to field first, a move that seemed to ignore the clear warnings provided by MI’s previous encounter on the very same pitch against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The crux of Ashwin’s critique lies in the reading of the pitch conditions. During MI’s earlier defeat to RCB, the surface became increasingly sluggish and sticky in the second innings, making a chase of 241 an impossible mountain to climb. Despite this recent data point, Pandya opted to bowl first against a CSK side that thrives on setting totals.
“I am slightly underwhelmed, Hardik won the toss and handed the advantage to a team that has only won matches in this tournament by batting first,” Ashwin noted.
While MI’s bowlers, including the young Allah Ghazanfar and the ever-reliable Jasprit Bumrah, managed to restrict CSK to 208, a lower total than RCB’s, the result was a catastrophic collapse. MI was bundled out for a mere 104, proving Ashwin’s point that the pitch becomes a minefield for the side batting second. Ashwin argued that against high-octane units like CSK or Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the lack of dew makes batting first an absolute necessity.

Bhagat, visibly under pressure, conceded 16 runs, a momentum-shifter that Ashwin believes the captain should have absorbed himself.
“A man who bowled to David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen in a T20 World Cup final should be bowling those overs himself,” Ashwin asserted, highlighting the disconnect between Pandya’s experience and his current on-field passivity.
However, Ashwin also touched upon the emotional burden currently weighing down the MI skipper. The transition from the Rohit Sharma era to the Pandya era has been anything but smooth. The veteran spinner acknowledged that being traded back from Gujarat Titans only to replace a legend like Rohit has created an environment of unprecedented hostility. While Pandya’s tactical errors are mounting, the psychological toll of being booed by home fans cannot be overlooked as MI struggles to find its identity in the 2026 season.
