Ipswich Town secured an immediate return to the Premier League as they clinched promotion from the Championship with a routine 3-0 win over QPR.
Kieran McKenna’s men went into the final day a point ahead of Millwall and two ahead of Middlesbrough in the race for second behind champions Coventry City, who rounded off their season by thrashing Watford 4-0.
They put any nerves to bed quickly when George Hirst tapped in the opener in the third minute.
Hirst then teed up Jaden Philogene for the second six minutes later, Philogene rolling home in composed fashion from point-blank range.
Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton was busier in the second half, but QPR never found a route back into the game and Kasey McAteer’s simple finish put Portman Road firmly into party mode.
Hull win play-off fight
Millwall finish third after their 2-0 win over relegated Oxford United, and they will face Hull City in the play-offs after the Tigers won the battle for sixth spot.
Hull came from a goal down to beat Norwich City 2-1, edging Wrexham and Derby County to the final play-off place.
Oli McBurnie scored the winner for Hull, as Wrexham fluffed their lines at the last in a frenetic 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. Derby held sixth for much of the 90 minutes after taking a 1-0 lead against Sheffield United, but they collapsed to a 2-1 defeat.
Boro finish fifth and will face Southampton, 3-1 winners at Preston North End, in the play-offs.
Owls cap historic day with win
At the other end of the table, bottom club Sheffield Wednesday marked a celebration of their long-awaited takeover with a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion.
Wednesday will not face a points deduction in League One next season and the win over the Baggies ensured they avoided finishing a nightmare season on minus points.
Elsewhere, Roy Hodgson’s 1,276th and likely final game in management saw his Bristol City side beat Stoke City 2-0.
