Newly promoted Ipswich Town have announced Japan international Daizen Maeda as the club’s fifth summer signing.

The 28-year-old has penned a three-year contract in a deal reportedly in the region of £10m from Scottish champions Celtic.

The move is a signal of intent from the Tractor Boys, as they look to consolidate their Premier League status, having returned to the top flight for a single season in 2024-25 before bouncing back at the first time of asking last term.

Reflecting on the move, Maeda, who represented Japan at this summer’s World Cup, said: “I am very proud to sign for Ipswich Town.

“I have always dreamed of playing in the Premier League and I am very happy I can realise that dream with this club. I have loved all of the conversations with the club and they have made me feel very welcome.

“My aim will always be to battle hard, score goals, and provide assists for my team – I will always run and give everything that I have.

“I am excited to learn more about the club and meet the supporters.”

Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil, who took over following the departure of Kieran McKenna, called Maeda a “valuable member of the squad” and said he was particularly impressed by the forward’s work rate.

He said: “Playing in the Premier League is something I know he has been working towards throughout his career and we are proud he has made the decision to do that now at Ipswich Town.

“He works extremely hard and has impressive physical attributes, while also proving over a number of years playing in Scotland that he has the ability to score goals and create for his team.”

    Celtic thank five-time league winner

Maeda enjoyed a trophy-laden spell in Scotland, helping his side win five league titles and five cup competitions since his arrival in 2022.

He scored 79 goals in 212 games, and thanked his “Celtic family”, hailing his time in Glasgow as “the most special chapter of my career and my life”.

He added: “It has been an incredible honour to wear this badge, to play for this amazing club, and to share so many unforgettable moments with my teammates, the staff, and the best supporters in the world.

“Thank you for standing by me through every high and low.”

Meanwhile, Celtic expressed their gratitude for Maeda in a social media post: “Thank you for everything.

“Wishing you all the very best as you begin the next chapter of your career with Ipswich Town.”

Ipswich begin their Premier League campaign on 22 August with the visit of Sunderland to Portman Road.
