Jamie Foxx Is Taking Applications for a Sports Coaching Job

Jamie Foxx asked his Instagram followers a question Tuesday: “What team should I coach?”

Three laughing emojis followed. No sport named. No city, no league. Foxx left the whole premise open.

The post pulled in more than 15,000 likes, a solid response for a short, casual caption.

Foxx, 58, has built one of the more varied careers in Hollywood over the past three decades. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for his portrayal of Ray Charles in “Ray.” The performance earned serious recognition. Foxx is a classically trained pianist and actually played the songs in the film rather than miming them. He’s also well known for “Django Unchained,” “Collateral,” and his role in the 2001 boxing film “Ali.”

Those movie roles came later. Foxx got his start doing stand-up in the late 1980s and eventually landed on television. He joined the sketch comedy show “In Living Color” in 1991 as a featured player. He later had his own sitcom, “The Jamie Foxx Show.” It ran on The WB from 1996 to 2001. Music came along too. His 2005 album “Unpredictable” hit number one on the Billboard 200 and went platinum.

That background in comedy gives the coaching question a certain logic. Foxx has always been comfortable with short, low-stakes humor. A quick one-liner with laughing emojis fits naturally with how he’s carried himself publicly for years.

He’s also a known sports fan. Foxx has been photographed courtside at NBA games over the years. That context probably makes the coaching question land a little better than it would from someone with no real interest in athletics.

Foxx also went through a difficult stretch in 2023. He was hospitalized in April of that year. His family announced he’d been dealing with a medical complication. He recovered and later spoke publicly about how serious the situation had been. He’s stayed active with film and television work since then.

Tuesday’s post came with no follow-up. No specific sport, no team named. Foxx put the question out there and left it.

That’s a pretty reliable formula for a bit of social media fun. A well-known person asks a short, funny question. People reply with their picks. The thread fills up quickly. Foxx is the right kind of person for this sort of thing. The joke doesn’t need much setup.

No professional league has publicly responded to the inquiry. No formal offer has come forward, at least not one that’s been reported. Foxx’s coaching career remains entirely hypothetical. His followers, though, seem more than willing to weigh in on the question.
