New Zealand bounced back in style to defeat West Indies by five wickets in the second ODI at Providence Stadium on Tuesday. After losing the series opener by seven wickets, the visitors produced a disciplined all-round display to square the five-match series 1-1, with left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox‘s sensational five-wicket haul laying the foundation for victory.

Jayden Lennox’s five-for dismantles West Indies batting lineup

Having won the toss and opted to bowl, New Zealand made the perfect start by restricting West Indies to just 138 in 36 overs. The hosts began positively through opener John Campbell, who struck a fluent 43 off 41 deliveries, including four boundaries and a six, to give his side early momentum.

Campbell found useful support from Ackeem Auguste and Keacy Carty, who both scored 18, while Amir Jangoo added a fighting 24 from 41 balls in the middle order. However, none of the West Indies batters were able to convert their starts into a substantial innings as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

The standout performer was Lennox, who ripped through the batting lineup with outstanding figures of 5/19 from eight overs. The spinner consistently troubled the batters with his accuracy and variation, turning the innings firmly in New Zealand’s favour. Mitchell Santner chipped in with two wickets for 21 runs, while Michael Bracewell also claimed a brace. Despite going wicketless, Jacob Duffy and Matthew Fisher kept things tight in the opening spell, ensuring West Indies never gained complete control.

Tom Latham guides New Zealand home after early hiccups

Chasing a modest target of 139, New Zealand suffered a few setbacks but never allowed the required run rate to become an issue. Henry Nicholls made 17 before departing, while Will Young played positively for his 28 off 31 balls, striking five boundaries to give the chase early momentum.

West Indies briefly fought back when Mark Chapman fell for a duck and Dean Foxcroft was also dismissed without scoring, raising hopes of a dramatic collapse. Daryl Mitchell steadied the innings with a composed 28 before captain Tom Latham took charge.

Latham anchored the chase with a patient 37 off 61 deliveries, ensuring New Zealand remained in control despite the occasional wicket. Bracewell then finished the job with an unbeaten 24 from 26 balls as the visitors reached 141/5 in 32.4 overs to seal victory with five wickets in hand. For West Indies, Khary Pierre was the most successful bowler with figures of 2/33 from nine overs, while Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie picked up one wicket each. However, the low first-innings total left the bowlers with little margin for error.

The victory sees New Zealand draw level in the five-match ODI series after West Indies had claimed a convincing seven-wicket win in the opening encounter. With the series now locked at 1-1, both teams will head into the third ODI at Providence Stadium on Thursday, July 16, knowing another victory could provide crucial momentum in the contest.
