With the Y2K chic always back in fashion, and Hannah Montana stardom still idolised, now is the perfect time for a reboot of Josie and the Pussycats. Rachel Leigh Cook, titular character Josie, addressed the potential of a return for this camp cult-classic in an interview with People, but didn’t hold out much hope.
However, it is now seen that Sony Pictures has taken on the glitz and glamour girl group for another day in the sun. As broken by The Insneider, Wicked producer Marc Platt plans to stand behind this project just as he did the first, encouraging a commitment to producing a better outcome.
The film followed three small-town musicians who are quickly thrust into the spotlight with a hit song and a sketchy record deal. On their rise to the top of punk pop, they uncover the corporate schemes to use music as a tool for manipulation, sending subliminal messaging and turning teenagers into mindless consumers. While it scored points for classic fashion and the core feeling of girlhood, it was objectively a flop – grossing less than it took to produce and facing mixed criticism about how the sentiment lands.
Though little has been aired about the reboot, it would be a comeback rooted in nostalgia – the glam of 2000s pop brought into the present, where their iconic cat headbands would have them stand out even more. There is speculation of how they would direct the story, with a new concept or a time-jumped follow-up.
It has to be said that with Josie and her girls finally finding their ground with several adoring fans, Sony is on the ball with their choice to revive what had the grounds to be a perfect blend of satirical teen comedy and a deeper comment on consumerism.
Josie and the Pussycats was a self-aware comedy that, with better marketing, could’ve ended up as the go-to 2000s feel-good. Perhaps the reboot will fare better – because what more could you want than glitz, glam and drama? Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, Rosario Dawson, Parker Posey and Alan Cumming starred.
