About a year after cleaning out my closet and donating a bunch of clothes, I realized something: everything leftover felt kind of boring, and I needed to add more whimsical items, STAT. Perhaps the bright yellow pants I once owned were no longer a fit, but I often think about Julia Roberts‘ breezy striped bottoms, wishing the same style sat in my wardrobe. The star’s bold, black-and-white pick — which, yes, she wore way back in 1993 — has remained on my mind for years, and much like her iconic polka-dot dress from Pretty Woman, the easy-yet-luxe design still feels like a summer staple.
While I don’t know where Roberts scored her pants (and assume the now-vintage pair would be an investment, to say the least), these loose trousers are fairly similar — and cost just $20. Personally, I’d take a styling tip from Roberts and mix prints, adding a horizontal striped tee for an outfit that’s simple yet statement-making. However, you could also tone down the pattern with a black or white button-down or play around with pops of color, adding a red, yellow or baby blue top. Really, these pants are more versatile than you might think!
Roberts’ outfit lives rent-free in my mind, but with this Amazon find, I’ll finally be able to recreate the look. Considering she wore the bottoms over 30 (!!!) years old, the lookalike pair will remain forever-cool and is a worthy investment to keep in rotation for decades to come!
