Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has strongly backed current-generation cricketers participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL), while taking a subtle dig at former players who continue to criticize the tournament and those involved in it. His comments arrived just days after the conclusion of IPL 2026, which saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), captained by Rajat Patidar, successfully defend their title and once again put the spotlight on the tournament’s growing impact on world cricket.

Pietersen’s remarks come at a time when discussions around player workload, franchise commitments, and the increasing influence of T20 leagues on international cricket remain a hot topic within the cricketing world.

Kevin Pietersen backs IPL players amid criticism from former cricketers

Pietersen made his stance clear through a post on social media, where he defended players who are part of the IPL ecosystem and suggested that many of the harshest critics never had the opportunity to experience the league themselves. The former England batter argued that ex-cricketers who never played in or benefited from the IPL often fail to understand the opportunities and challenges that come with participating in the tournament.

According to Pietersen, such criticism is frequently disconnected from the realities of modern-day professional cricket. His comments quickly gained attention across social media, with many fans and current players appreciating his support for cricketers navigating an increasingly demanding global calendar.

Ex cricketers who never played/benefitted from the IPL, using quite damning language on current players who are playing the IPL, simply have no idea.
    Zero clue whatsoever!
    But, let them be…..
    I SUPPORT THE PLAYERS! 🙏🏻

IPL continues to reshape modern cricket

Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has played a major role in reshaping the cricketing landscape. The tournament has provided players from around the world with opportunities to share dressing rooms with international stars, work with elite coaches, and perform on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

However, the league’s growing influence has also sparked debates regarding player availability, scheduling conflicts, and the balance between franchise and international cricket. Recent workload discussions involving players such as Jofra Archer and Jacob Bethell have further highlighted the challenges faced by modern cricketers. Several former cricketers have voiced concerns over the years about the impact of T20 leagues on the longer formats of the game.

Pietersen, who himself enjoyed a successful IPL career during his playing days, appears to believe that such criticism often overlooks the benefits the competition provides. His latest remarks underline his support for players who are embracing the opportunities available in the modern era of cricket.

As franchise cricket continues to expand across the globe, discussions surrounding its role in the sport are unlikely to disappear anytime soon. For Pietersen, though, the message is straightforward, current players deserve support rather than criticism as they navigate the evolving demands of professional cricket.
