Children’s book author Kouri Richins built a public identity around grief — penning a heartfelt picture book to help her three young sons process the loss of their father. But a Utah jury has now decided that the very tragedy she chronicled was one she orchestrated herself.

Richins was convicted in March 2026 of fatally poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with a fentanyl-laced drink at their Kamas, Utah, home on March 4, 2022. Four years later, she was sentenced to spend the rest of her life behind bars. Her attorneys say they plan to fight the verdict on appeal, but for now, the woman who once positioned herself as the grieving widow has been declared his killer.

Here’s everything to know about the case that gripped Utah and made national headlines.

Kouri Richins Found Guilty After Just 3 Hours of Deliberation

Jurors needed only three hours on March 16, 2026, to find Kouri guilty of first-degree aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, forgery and insurance fraud.

A Connecticut mother already accused of trying to fatally poison her husband is now facing perjury and evidence tampering charges, Us Weekly has learned. Kristen Hogan, 33, stands accused of committing perjury and tampering with evidence during an ongoing custody and paternity dispute with her husband. Hogan was arrested on December 11 for trying to […]

Kouri bowed her head as the first guilty verdict was read aloud, showing almost no emotion as the panel returned its decision. Prosecutors had argued throughout the trial that she poisoned the father of her three children for financial gain — a motive supported by a paper trail of forged documents and fraudulent insurance maneuvers tied to his death.

The verdict capped a years-long legal saga that began almost immediately after Eric’s body was found unresponsive in the couple’s home in the early morning hours of March 4, 2022.

Eric Richins’ Death and the Fentanyl Evidence

Kouri initially told investigators that she and her husband had been celebrating a business deal the night before, only for her to wake and discover him lifeless. The story she presented publicly was that of a sudden, devastating loss — one she would later spin into a children’s book about coping with grief.

The forensic evidence told a different story. A medical examiner determined that Eric had five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his system at the time of his death, and that the drug had been orally ingested rather than injected or snorted. Investigators ultimately concluded that Kouri had laced Eric’s beverage with the powerful synthetic opioid.

Alongside the murder allegations, prosecutors built a parallel case around forgery, mortgage fraud and insurance fraud — accusing her of taking calculated financial steps both before and after Eric’s death to position herself to benefit from it.

Kouri Richins Sentenced to Life Without the Possibility of Parole

On May 13, 2026, Kouri was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The hearing was emotionally charged, in part because Kouri’s three sons had submitted victim impact statements making clear they would feel unsafe if she were ever released, according to NBC News. Kouri, given the chance to address them directly, used much of her time at the lectern speaking to the boys.

“I will never be angry at you for your feelings,” she said, adding that she had been trying to get into contact with them for years. “All I care about is you boys.”

Victoria, 32, spoke directly to Aaron, 49, on Thursday, June 5, apologizing for her actions. “Firstly, and most importantly, I would like to apologize to Aaron. I’m so immensely […]

She also accused her late husband’s family of being responsible for the rift between her and her children.

“You boys are my world, the reason I continue to wake up every day and fight to come home,” Kouri said, per the outlet. “I promise you boys one day it will be over.”

Kouri acknowledged she had “done plenty of things I am not proud of” and told her sons that “nobody is all good or all bad.” She added, “We are not defined by our best or our worst moments.”

She encouraged the boys to protect one another, help others and prioritize their happiness. “Be like your dad,” she said through tears.

Judge Richard Mrazik Weighs the Sentence

Before handing down the sentence, State District Judge Richard Mrazik acknowledged the weight of what was being decided — not only for Richins, but for the children left in the wake of her crime.

“It is simply not possible for anyone, not even those young men, to know how their view of this case may evolve over the next several decades,” Mrazik said. “My hope is that every person affected by Eric Richins’ death will, over time, find their way to a state of peace.”

Following the sentencing, Richins’ attorneys announced they intend to file an appeal seeking a new trial, per NBC News.

    Defense Team’s Allegations Against Investigators

In the months leading up to trial, Kouri’s defense team mounted an aggressive push to discredit the state’s case. On January 25, 2026, attorneys filed a motion requesting the disclosure of all texts and communications between prosecutors and any witnesses, KUTV reported.

“Last week, the defense team received notice from one of the State’s witnesses … that she was being harassed by an investigator working with the prosecution and inquiring whether there was anything we could do to protect her from them,” the document stated, per the outlet.

Defense attorneys claimed the witness shared text messages exchanged with lead detective Jeff O’Driscoll, in which he allegedly threatened her with arrest if she did not cooperate.

“Make your life easier and answer our calls so we can prep you on what you will be asked. Otherwise, the next time I knock on your door, I’ll have a warrant and a catch pole for the dog,” O’Driscoll allegedly said in the texts.

Defense lawyers branded the exchange “blatant witness intimidation.” A second witness similarly claimed that investigator Travis Hopper had threatened to withdraw previously granted immunity if the witness refused to meet with prosecutors in person.

“Investigator Hopper then threatened to withdraw previous immunity granted to this witness and submit him to prosecution if he does not agree to come in to discuss his testimony in person with the prosecution team,” the defense argued.

Prosecutors declined to litigate the matter publicly. “We will be responding non-publicly with the Court, as is appropriate this close to jury selection,” Attorney Margaret Olson said, per KUTV. Ultimately, the motion did not derail the case, and the jury returned its verdict weeks later.

The Children’s Book That Made Kouri Richins a Local Celebrity

After Eric’s death, Kouri reinvented herself as a public face of grief, publishing a children’s book titled Are You With Me? The book chronicled her stated journey of mourning and was marketed as a tool to help kids cope with the loss of a loved one.

That platform turned her into a local celebrity in Utah — and made her eventual arrest, trial and conviction all the more stunning. With her appeal now in the works, the final chapter of her story remains unwritten.
