Life moves fast, but HBO moves faster. After her unexpected departure from season four of The White Lotus late last week, HBO has already found a replacement for Helena Bonham Carter.
Oscar-winner Laura Dern is officially joining the murder mystery series, according to a report from Deadline. However, rather than taking on the role originally meant for Carter, Dern is said to be playing a new character being developed and written for her by series creator and director Mike White.
At the time of Carter’s exit, an HBO spokesperson said that after filming had gotten underway on the new season the week before, “it had become apparent” that the character White created for her “did not align once on set.”
Season four of The White Lotus will mark the latest collaboration between Dern and White. The actress starred in the 2007 film Year of the Dog, written and directed by White. The two also co-created HBO’s series Enlightened, which starred Dern and ran from 2011 to 2013.
Laura Dern joins a stacked cast for the upcoming season, which includes Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Vincent Cassel, Dylan Ennis, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, Marissa Long, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, and Nadia Tereszkiewicz.
Additional cast includes Heather Graham, Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Rosie Perez, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Jarrad Paul, Ben Schnetzer, Charlie Hall, and Laura Smet.
Production on the fourth season of The White Lotus is now underway in the French Riviera, with the latest series set during the Cannes Film Festival.
