Former Liverpool forward and manager Kenny Dalglish has revealed he is undergoing treatment for cancer.
The 75-year-old, widely regarded as one of the club’s greatest players, mistakenly revealed his condition in a now deleted social media post before confirming he was suffering from the disease.
He wrote: “As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.
“Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.”
Dalglish – a Liverpool hero on and off the field
Dalglish has a stand named after him at Anfield after a decorated career at the club as both player and manager.
He scored 172 goals in 515 appearances after joining Liverpool from Celtic in 1977, becoming player-manager in 1985.
The Scot won a total of eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and five League Cups in his first spell on Merseyside, which ended in 1991.
He returned as manager in 2011, winning the 2012 League Cup.
Hillsborough Disaster took its toll on Dalglish
Dalglish, who also won 102 caps for Scotland, was Liverpool boss at the time of the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989 that ultimately killed 97 fans and became a hugely respected figure for the dignity and compassion he showed in the years that followed.
He resigned as boss in February 1991 citing stress but will forever remain one of the club’s most influential figures.
The club responded to today’s news by stating: “The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will continue to be, with Sir Kenny and his family.
“The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward.”
