Lupita Nyong’o is finally addressing the intense criticism surrounding her role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “The Odyssey.”

The Oscar-winning actress has found herself at the center of a heated online debate after some critics questioned her casting as Helen of Troy.

As backlash continues to spread across social media, Nyong’o is making it clear she has no intention of apologizing for taking the role.

During a new interview with Elle, Nyong’o opened up about the controversy and pushed back against claims that she should not portray the iconic character in Universal’s adaptation of Homer’s epic story.

Some online critics, including several right-wing commentators, argued that the Black actress should not play a figure often described as “the most beautiful woman in the world.” Nyong’o, however, reminded readers that the story itself is rooted in mythology rather than strict historical accuracy.

“I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling,” she said.

The actress also defended the diverse casting approach Nolan chose for the film.

“Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not. … It’s quite something to be a part of The Odyssey, because it is so grand. It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time. … I was so deeply honored to be entrusted with the role.”

Beauty Debate Sparked Heated Online Reactions

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the backlash involved the idea that Helen of Troy is traditionally viewed as the woman whose beauty started a legendary war.

Lupita Nyong’o dismissed the argument that her value in the role should be based entirely on appearance.

“You can’t perform beauty,” she explained.

The actress said she was far more interested in understanding the emotional and personal depth of the character rather than focusing only on physical attractiveness.

She said, “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks? That’s the thing about doing such a well-known text, which has been studied and interpreted and derived from. The research could be endless.”

Nyong’o also praised Nolan’s writing process and explained how she approached preparing for the role.

She shared, “The good thing about working with a writer like Chris is that it’s on the page. The investigation starts with the pages you’re given. That’s what I based it on.”

Lupita Nyong’o Became Target Of Viral Criticism

We’re told that we shouldn’t object to Helen of Troy being portrayed as a black woman. And yet if a major Hollywood studio made a film set in Africa and cast a white woman as “the most beautiful woman in Africa,” those same people would literally riot in the street. If, say,…

The controversy surrounding Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy exploded after conservative commentator Matt Walsh criticized Christopher Nolan’s casting choice on X.

Walsh shared his frustration publicly while reposting coverage of Nyong’o’s role in “The Odyssey.”

“Not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.’ But Christopher Nolan knows that he would be called racist if he gave ‘the most beautiful woman’ role to a white woman,” Walsh wrote.

He continued attacking the filmmaker, adding, “Nolan is technically talented but a coward. Too afraid to do anything that even slightly challenges the spirit of the age.”

Tesla billionaire Elon Musk later joined the discussion with a short response that drew even more attention to the controversy. Musk simply replied, “True.”

The billionaire later continued criticizing Nolan’s casting decision while arguing that Nyong’o did not fit how he personally viewed the legendary figure from the source material.

Musk also referenced the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ representation and inclusion standards for Best Picture eligibility, which further fueled debate online.

Supporters Quickly Rallied Around The Actress

While critics continued attacking the casting, several celebrities and fans publicly defended Lupita Nyong’o and condemned the backlash directed at her.

Actor Alec Baldwin became one of the most notable voices supporting the actress. Baldwin posted a photo of Nyong’o on Instagram alongside a message aimed directly at Musk.

“Dear Elon,” Baldwin wrote, “but she IS the most beautiful woman in the world… Alec.”

The post quickly spread across social media as supporters praised Baldwin for standing up for the actress during the controversy.

At the same time, other social media users sided with Musk and Walsh, accusing Nolan of intentionally provoking audiences with the casting choice.

“It feels like a humiliation ritual,” one X user wrote while criticizing the filmmaker’s recent creative decisions.

The user also complained that Nolan had gone from films like “Oppenheimer” and “Interstellar” to choices they considered absurd.

Despite the nonstop online arguments surrounding the film, Nyong’o made it clear she is not allowing the criticism to consume her.

The actress explained that she prefers to focus on the people who support her rather than obsessing over negativity from strangers online.

“I can’t spend my time thinking about all the people who still don’t love me,” she said in her chat with Elle.

Nyong’o added, “You’ll find the representatives who believe in you, and you’ll get on with it. I want to believe I’m built to last.”

Her response has only intensified discussion around “The Odyssey,” which is already shaping up to be one of Christopher Nolan’s most talked-about projects long before its release.

With supporters and critics continuing to clash online, the casting controversy shows no signs of fading anytime soon.
