Mackenzie Shirilla was 17 when she was involved in a car crash in 2022 that took the lives of both passengers. She was arrested on charges of aggravated murder. A Netflix documentary about the incident put the story back in the news. She was sentenced to two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life, meaning she’ll be in jail for a long time. However, she has just received a cushy new prison job after complaints. Keep reading for all the details.
Netflix Documentary Puts Verdict In Doubt
The investigation into the crash immediately revealed something fishy. The driver, Mackenzie Shirilla, had her foot pressed down on the accelerator, going nearly 100 miles per hour before crashing into a brick wall. The car’s black box revealed that the brake was never pressed. The judge in the case found Mackenzie Shirilla guilty on all 12 charges, including four counts of murder, felonious assault, and aggravated vehicular homicide.
The judge ruled that Mackenzie Shirilla intentionally crashed the car that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend Davion Flanagan. However, the Netflix documentary brought new attention to the case. Social media sleuths found several inconsistencies in the evidence. They shared some wild theories online, echoing her father’s claims that she suffered a medical incident.
Mackenzie Shirilla Gets Cushy Prison Job After Complaints
Mackenzie Shirilla has the support of both of her parents. Her jail cell phone calls with her mother, Natalie, were released after the Netflix documentary brought new attention to the case. At times, Mackenzie Shirilla complained of being bored in prison and asked her mother for an iPad. In other conversations, she gushed over the attention she’s gotten from men.

TMZ reported that Mackenzie Shirilla will have less time to get bored in prison. She recently landed a cushy job in jail, something she didn’t think would happen. She thought that the prison would be scared to put her to work in the facility because of why she’s there. A prison spokesperson told TMZ that Mackenzie Shirilla has a new job as a food service worker at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.
Ohio law prevents public records from listing how much inmates are paid. However, the outlet speculated that Mackenzie Shirilla could earn $24 a month with her new job. Plus, it gives her real-life work experience for when she’s up for parole in October 2037.
She’s already started making plans for an eventual release from prison. One of the many leaked phone calls with her mom revealed her post-prison life goals. In another released call, the mother and daughter trash the residents of the town where the accident happened. “Strongsville people are so sad and depressing,” she told her mother in a call from prison.
