Manchester United dealt blow by FA’s Harry Maguire decision

The decision leaves Michael Carrick with a headache.

Manchester United will be without Harry Maguire for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea after he was handed a further one-match ban by the Football Association.

The centre-back was hit with the punishment after admitting a charge of acting “in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official” following his red card during United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last month.

Maguire had already received a one-match suspension for bringing down Evanilson and conceding a penalty 12 minutes from time at the Vitality Stadium, ruling him out of Monday’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Leeds United.

FA publish reasons for Maguire decision

In an incident report submitted to the FA, fourth official Matt Donohue claimed Maguire said to him as he left the pitch: “You’re a joke, you’re all a f****** joke.”

Maguire, in a subsequent statement issued in response to disciplinary proceedings, disputed that version of events.

“As I left the field of play following my dismissal I said something along the lines of “it is a f****** joke”,” Maguire wrote.

“I am certain that I did not call the Fourth Official or any Match Official, a joke or use any other form of insult.”

    Manchester United manager Michael Carrick

He has been handed a £30,000 fine on top of the additional ban, which leaves interim boss Michael Carrick with a selection headache at the back following Lisandro Martinez’s controversial red card against Leeds.

Martinez was shown a straight red card in the Red Devils’ home loss for pulling the hair of Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 56th minute.

The Argentinian now faces a three-match ban and, though United have appealed his dismissal, the decision of referee Paul Tierney is expected to be upheld.

United’s game with Chelsea will be a crucial one in the race for a top-five finish in the Premier League and Champions League qualification. Seven points separate United in third and Chelsea in sixth with six games to go in the season.
