Oregon authorities said multiple people were killed and an officer was badly wounded in a mass shooting that erupted Sunday afternoon in the city of Sandy.
Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey did not specify how many people were killed in the carnage, nor did he identify the suspect, but Portland ABC affiliate KATU-TV reported the suspect was 38-year-old Bryan Andrew Moore.
Clackamas County jail records show Moore was booked Sunday night on three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of kidnapping and felon in possession of a firearm.
“This is a traumatic event for our community and the Sandy Police Department, and I know many people are grieving,” Chief Huskey said at a Sunday night press conference. “I ask everyone in our community to keep the victims, our injured officer and families, friends and all the first responders in their thoughts tonight.”
Authorities said they were called to a home on Evans Street around 4 p.m. for a domestic disturbance and a shooting.
Chief Huskey said Sandy police officers and deputies with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office came under fire shortly after they arrived on scene.
One officer was hit by gunfire several times in the exchange, officials said, and police shot back at the assailant. The gunman eventually surrendered and was taken into custody “peacefully,” the chief said.
Authorities said the wounded officer was flown to a hospital for emergency treatment. He is expected to survive.
Chief Huskey only said there were “multiple victims” found dead at the original home that prompted a police response.
“Tonight, our Sandy community grieves the unimaginable loss of lives from a domestic violence incident,” Sandy Mayor Kathleen Walker said in a statement late Sunday. “Our small town is not shielded by distance or size. Sandy sadly has joined an unfortunate group of other towns to face this crisis.”
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation going forward, Chief Huskey said.
