Fashion icon Miranda Priestly returns to big screens this week in The Devil Wears Prada 2, however, Meryl Streep recently revealed that she almost turned the original role down.
The three-time Oscar winner revealed on Today that whilst she had faith in the adaptation of the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, she had initially turned the role down, sharing, “I read the script. Script was great. And they called me up and I said No, not going to do it”
Adding, “I knew it was going to be a hit, and I wanted to see if I doubled my ask. And they went right away and said sure. And I thought I’m 50, 60 – it took me this long to understand that I could do that.”
Sensing she would be vital to the film she said, “They needed me, I felt. I was ready to retire. But, you know, that was a lesson.”
20 years on, Miranda Priestly reunites with Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2, as she struggles against Emily Charlton, her former assistant turned rival executive, as they compete for advertising revenue amid declining print media, while Miranda nears retirement.
Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci also reprise their roles and are joined by Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, and B.J. Novak. With Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman also returning in their roles from the first film.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 releases in cinemas on May 1st.
